I know I’m a little late to the party, but I’ve only started watching Gilmore Girls over the past year and am just two series in. And, unsurprisingly, I’m loving it!
As a huge fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I’d probably enjoy anything created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. I just can’t get enough of the clever, fast and funny dialogue, plus the strong female leads.
With a series that starts in the fall, an idyllic town decorated in seasonal decor, and a back-to-school vibe with Rory starting at Chilton, it’s the perfect box-set pairing for autumn.
And everyone I know would just love to live in Stars Hollow at this time of year. The golden leaves, pumpkins, sunflowers and fairy lights combine beautifully to create the ultimate cosy vibe.
I’m convinced that the ever-increasing popularity of decorating a home for autumn is down to Gilmore Girls, so I’m dubbing it “Gilmorecore”, and today I’m sharing the essential elements to include in your own home to get the look for less.
So, snuggle up with a knitted blanket and one of those huge cups of coffee and read on get inspiration for your own seasonal decor to welcome in the autumn…

1. Lorelai’s lovely lighting
I recently wrote about how the most important element to create a cosy home in the autumn is lighting so I’ve been looking for autumnal decor that incorporates an element of lights.
I think Lorelai would drape shelves, mantlepieces and staircases in strings of fairy lights, so I suggest looking for warm white and golden lights to create that soft glow and autumnal ambience in your home.
It’s possible to find plenty of seasonal-themed fairy lights and LED candles in the autumn decor collection from Lights4Fun, a brand that I’ve shopped with for my Christmas tree lights in the past.
Strings of glass acorn lights or vibrant pumpkin-shaped fairy lights work perfectly for your autumnal Stars Hollow theme. Plus, simple warm white fairy lights can be strung up around your home and can continue to be used throughout Christmas, too.
If you want to get the look of a flickering candle, stick to the LED options available – safety first! These can be used all through the autumn and winter months to instantly create a peaceful ambience. I had some that are remote controlled, which makes it so simple to turn them on in the evenings.
There are cute pumpkin-shaped designs available, plus realistic-looking church candles, tealights and votives in amber glass jars, which will look beautiful at any time of year but especially in the ‘ber months.
2. Rory’s rustic rooms
It’s likely that the Gilmore Girls will be DIYing their decor, using whatever rustic options they can find around their town; a piece of hessian from a coffee beans sack, bark or logs from a local woodland and fresh sunflowers from a market stall.
Plus, they’ll probably reuse items they already have in their home, such as adding knitted blankets and velvet cushions to the sofa, ready to snuggle up for film-watching sessions.
Even though Rory’s a rather grown-up teenager, I’m sure she’d still get excited about creating a Halloween-themed interior for October, and get Lorelai’s help to sew a spooky cushion from an old T-shirt.
But I’m convinced she’d make it classy with tall LED candles and pumpkins, along with a few ghost motifs for the spook-factor, rather than spiders and skeletons.
3. Emily’s elevated exterior
There’s no need to limit your “Gilmorecore” decor to the interior of your home; make like Emily Gilmore and dress the door of your grand mansion too.
You could make your own seasonal wreath using autumnal branches, horse chestnuts and dried seed heads from your own garden. This is a thrifty way to get the look but I’m sure Emily won’t be getting her hands dirty.
So, it’s possible to buy pre-styled autumn wreathes with ‘forever’ foliage that are suitable for outdoor use. Plus, some design incorporate battery-powered fairy lights on a timer, which extends that soft, inviting glow to the exterior of your home.
Much like dressing the outside of your home for Christmas, there’s no reason why you can’t start putting up lights in the autumn too, especially if you have a porch. It makes the property look so inviting as evenings get darker.
