5 Ways to spruce up your bathroom for summer

The birds are chirping, the bees are buzzing, and the sun is out in full force.  That’s right – summer is well and truly here and now is the perfect time to refresh your bathroom. I’ve been working on my own bathroom renovation project and will be sharing photos of the ‘finished’ room next week so watch this space. Just the smallest of changes can make the biggest of differences in the bathroom, and you can breathe new life into a washroom without breaking the bank. Whether you need to update your fixtures or want to work with what you’ve got, creating a bright and polished summer look is easy. Simply follow these easy tips and tricks.

1. Let there be light

Summer is all about making the most out of the sunshine. This is why it is important to bathe your bathroom in natural light with mirrored finishes and reflective surfaces. Placing wall hung mirrors on two adjacent walls will really bounce the sunlight around the room, and chrome fittings and accessories will reflect light better than their matt plastic counterparts. If you don’t have a bathroom window, then mounting sconces over your wall-hung mirrors will add depth to the room’s lighting and will free up valuable countertop space. With all this in mind, remember to invite nature in the bathroom too. Fresh flowers or shade-loving plants never fail to brighten up even the darkest of spaces.

2. Update those fixtures

If you can’t afford to buy a new washbasin or bathtub, then don’t worry – switching out the taps will make the world of difference.  They are relatively cheap to buy and can be easily fitted onto your existing sink for a more polished look. For a touch of contemporary class, waterfall taps make a stunning style statement and allow water to cascade beautifully into the basin. Alternatively, shiny new crosshead taps exude elegance for a traditional bathroom setting. Bathrooms look their best when the fixtures match each other, so if you update the basin taps you should also upgrade the bath faucets in the same style.

3.Work with what you’ve got

It’s easy to modernise your bath or shower area without ripping it out and starting from scratch…simply work with what you’ve got! To restore your bath to its former glory, use white wine vinegar and water to cut through the soap scum and grime. If your bath is still looking a bit tired and world-weary, then upgrade your bath side panels for simple and cheap update. These come in a range of designs and sizes to co-ordinate the style and colour scheme in the bathroom. For shower curtains that are looking a little 90s, a chic shower glass screen replacement will give an instant visual lift that is perfect for summer. Shower screens offer sleek design and create the illusion of greater bathroom space.

4.Style up the shower

When it comes to the bathroom, you should never have to compromise on the comfort of your shower.  Instead of installing a new system, simply switch out the old showerhead for a beautiful ceiling drencher that feels like gentle rain. Many affordable models are available and they thread easily onto existing plumbing with professional installation.  Alternatively, replacing your showerhead with a brand new hand-held model is a quick and easy way to add style and improve performance.

5. Get Creative

New tiles can cost a fortune to remove or replace, so spruce them up by restoring the grout to its previous white hue. Specialist cleaning products are easy to use and will contribute to a cleaner and more polished wall design. Alternatively, if your colour scheme is looking a bit dull, why not add a splash of summer colour with wall tile paint? Painters tape can be used to create a horizontal wall pattern and you can fill in the design with a sunny yellow or duck-egg blue tile paint. Word of warning – it’s best to let the artist of the family do this one! For vanity units that are showing signs of age, a fresh coat of paint or stain is a simple and cost effective way to renew a vanity unit to its former glory.  Alternatively, you can glue lightweight decorative fretwork panels to the drawers or door fronts for a more ornate transformation.
