Why choosing faux plants for your home is a great idea

If you want to bring the outside in without any mess or fuss, artificial plants are one of the best accessories you can add to your home to bring add a splash of colour – here’s why…Last month I wrote about the benefits of adding indoor plants to your home and, although I’d love to bring more natural elements into my house, I have two rather inquisitive cats. You should see them when the Christmas tree gets put up in December. Let’s just say that I don’t put my best baubles on the lower branches! So, for those of us who have cheeky pets, toddlers or allergies, I thought I’d write about the ways in which artificial plants can be used to create the same effect in your home.

• They’re safe, so you don’t need to worry about pets or children getting hold of them.
• And, because they’ll never die, you only need to buy them once to get a lifetime of greenery in your home.

CALM WORKING ENVIRONMENT

If, like me, you have a home office and often need to spend time working indoors, adding plants to the space can create a sense of calm. This can be particularly helpful if you’re carrying out stressful tasks – the foliage gives you something to focus on when you glance away from your computer screen and can help you to feel more relaxed, just by looking at the ‘natural’ colours and shapes. You may have spotted a faux succulent (above) from Paperchase and artificial pot plants in my photos of my home office. I regularly move them around the room to catch my eye and remind me to stay relaxed. I’ve even got knitted cacti by ChopsAndDoodles and DottyBag (below) that my husband got me for Christmas, and they have the same calming effect on me.

GROUP THE GREENERY

To make a lively, realistic and eye-catching display, having dense foliage of two or more faux plants together does the job. Artificial plants are pretty realistic these days – they are modelled on real plants and will have a range of dark and light green leaves with folds, veins and variegated patterns. Sometimes you have to get really close to a faux plant to realise that it’s not the real deal. Unlike live plants, false ones do not require any kind of maintenance at all, which is super-convenient for folk like me who always forget to water plants.

CREATE A CUTE CORNER

If you’re got a bare space in one of your rooms, grouping plants together can give it a focal point – much like adding artwork. Artificial plants are often lightweight so are easy to pop into a macrame hanging pot (like the one above from DotComGiftShop) and can by hung in a group of three (at varying heights) in front of decorative wall panels or brick-effect walls to get that cool loft vibe.  Also, the plants have no requirement for natural light or water so they can be placed anywhere in your interior. If you choose a faux plant in a material that is UV ray resistant, you can even put it in a sunny spot without worrying about the loss of colour of the leaves. In short, the artificial plants can be a small but indispensable part of your interior design plan, especially when it comes to office, bedroom and bathroom decor. They’re especially useful if you don’t have much time to spare, or money to spend, on real plants.
