Cosy autumnal styling hacks from Danish, Irish & US homes

Are you feeling autumnal? Has the new season hit you yet? If you're already putting the thick duvet on the bed and adding blankets to the sofa, this interior styling post is for you! Here's how to get that cosy autumnal feeling in your own home, taking inspiration from Irish, Danish and American interiors...

Are you feeling autumnal? Has the new season hit you yet? The weather seems to have finally turned here and I’m ready for it. We’re putting the thick duvet on the bed and I’ve added blankets to the sofa. But I’m sure there are much cuter ways to bring that cosy autumnal feeling into your home, which is why I’ve been researching from Irish, Danish and American interiors this week. I thought I’d share what I found so that you can recreate the look in your own home…

IRELAND

I was reading an e-book earlier this week on the Ultimate Irish Homes, and was totally inspired by the content. It’s based on research into the ideal home in Ireland and the survey discovered that certain decor styles are loved by many homes around the country. The majority of homes have ‘traditional’ interiors, with homeowners steering away from minimalist and retro interiors. I think the traditional style in these photos from the e-book have a thoroughly welcoming, autumnal feel.

Whether it’s a period property or a farmhouse style, I think the key here is a dark, enveloping space that features a fireplace and is lit by lamps. Piling cushions and textured throws onto the soft makes it look such a lovely place to put your feet up, doesn’t it? Interestingly enough, the research in this e-book by house insurance provider Chill shows that nearly 70% of people surveyed would prefer a new build home (or at least one that was less than 10 years old) so it just goes to show that it’s not the age of the property that counts, it’s the cosiness and period features that you add in!

AMERICA

I’ve been reading a lot of US interiors blogs recently because my good friend Amy recommended lots of fabulous design bloggers to me. I love the way that American homes are styled up for autumn, it’s like living in a perfect seasonal show-home and I’d love to be able to dress my own house to make it look cosy and snug. It’s all about the pumpkins. And gourds. And squashes too. Pile them up on every surface and in every nook for the perfect harvest look.

Neutral hues are very much a theme that runs through all the US interiors blogs I’ve visited. I’m starting to appreciate cream as a colour choice, and I love how Amy from design blog Cuter Tudor has woven pale blues into her home to keep the decor looking crisp and contemporary. Yet it still doesn’t look cold, thanks to the vintage pieces and rustic wooden furniture.

DENMARK

You may remember that I wrote about Brontë Aurell on my blog last year and shared an extract from her book ‘North’. It’s all about living in Denmark and how the environment shapes their home and lives. The tag line of the book is “How to live Scandinavian” and that’s certainly something that I aim to bring into my own life and home this winter.

In the photo above, she shared inspiration for creating a cosy bedroom and it’s all about the layering; duvets and blankets on the bed, rugs on the floor and plenty of textures. Again, light plays an important part in creating a cosy autumnal interior, with a candle-bulb chandelier and anglepoise bedside lamp. This bed just makes you want to dive straight in, doesn’t it? And it’s easy to replicate in your own home by simply adding more and more bedding! At least all those squishy layers will help us to stay cosy during UK winters!

What do you think of these three different interior styles for autumn? Will you be taking inspiration from any of these trends to decorate your own home over the coming months? I really like all the blue and grey hues – it just goes to show that these cooler colours don’t mean your room is going to feel cold or unwelcoming. Let me know your own styling tips for your autumn home in the comments below – I’d love to hear your ideas!

  1. Sounds like the perfect combo! Ahh I’d love to knit a blanket – maybe with really thick yarn and those giant needles so it won’t take too long haha!

  2. I think my interior style switches between Irish (unsurprisingly) in the living room and kitchen and Danish in the office and bedroom. Interesting mix lol. I’m getting more ready for Autumn now the chill is most definitely in the air! I think I might have to knit myself a blanket, my crochet blanket is taking far too long! Hooray for all things snuggly.
