The Olympic Torch Relay – in a town near you!

Yesterday the Olympic torch passed through Suffolk so I went to our local town to see it go by. Although I’m always keen to join in local events (such as the Diamond Jubilee, see my pics here) I wasn’t quite prepared for just how exciting it would be to see the Olympic torch pass by!

It had a bit of a wait for it to arrived, but this was punctuated with other pockets of excitement – the lead Olympic car driving past, the bus transporting all the torchbearers, the support lorries with music blaring – a very festive atmosphere and the time went really quickly. Luckily enough the next torch-bearer (called Alex) was dropped off the bus and was waiting to receive the flame right in front of us! (So of course mum ran over to have a photo taken with him!) All of a sudden the Olympic flame was approaching and it was a pretty quick process from it being spotted in the distance to the lighting of the next torch – called ‘the kiss’, which meant that the Olympic flame stopped right in front of us and gave us all a great photo opportunity!

Pretty soon, the torch-bearer was off on the next leg of the relay and disappeared into the distance. So it was quite a brief experience but SO exciting – I’d totally underestimated how amazing it would be! Definitely worth getting a little bit wet in the drizzle to see the kind of event that you’d tell your grandchildren about one day! If you can get to see the Olympic torch on the last part of its journey around the country, please do – its pretty cool!
