Home tour of a vintage-industrial style workers’ cottage from the 1900s

I first discovered Amy Shepherd and her beautiful home via the @mysustainablehomestyle Instagram account. One of the lovely homeowners that I’ve previously shared a home tour of on my blog @lana_rose_interiors_stafford is a co-host of the sustainable home style account and Amy is another contributor.

When I first spotted Amy’s own profile @renovatethishouselovethishouse, I found myself scrolling back to see all the amazing renovation work she has done on this cottage and her other previous homes. With all the industrial details, vintage pieces and Amy’s sustainable ethos, I knew her home would make a very interesting tour.

The property was once a worker’s cottage for a large flax bleach works in Yorkshire and it falls within a large estate with the original manor house nearby. It’s stone-built and it features large archways that once enabled horses to gain access to flax bleach works.

The archways have become the windows to the new kitchen, which flood the duel-aspect space with light and create an airy feel in the interior. Amy enjoys restoring period homes to their former glory and always searches our reclaimed fixtures when renovating her home.

The industrial details in the cottage take inspiration from the nearby railway tunnel that was built in 1849 to connect trains between West and North Yorkshire. As such, Amy sourced salvaged lanterns from an Etsy Seller who turns old reclaimed pieces into new light fixtures.

I’m really impressed by ALL the lighting in Amy’s home. Plenty of lamps and the addition of fairy lights (which I personally love to use year-round, too) all cast a warm white glow in each room and make them feel super cosy. In fact, you’ll probably spot fairy lights in all of these photos.

Amy rarely buys anything new – instead, she sources old armchairs and sofas and gives them a new lease of life by reupholstering them in William Morris and Sanderson fabrics. I love patterned upholstery and these fabrics are timeless.
