Gone are the days of buying the bride and groom wedding gifts to help them set up their home – many couples have lived together for a long time before taking the plunge so they probably don’t need another toaster!
So, what gifts would newlyweds like to receive for their wedding? Here are some ideas that are a bit more personal than cash but that the bride and groom will find equally useful…
Gifts for the wedding day
If you’re close to the bride and groom, it can be a good idea to suggest buying them something that they need for their wedding. I’m not talking about tablecloths, cake stands or practical things like that (although I did organise the photo booth for my brother’s wedding as a gift for the couple). I’m talking about something a little more luxurious.
Most brides and grooms will up their accessory game on their wedding day, so consider treating them to a beautiful piece of jewellery. Something special like a pair of engraved cufflinks or vintage pearl necklaces would be a wedding gift that the couple would treasure.
They can wear their jewellery on the big day and it will forever remind them of the occasion. I still have a bracelet that was the ‘something new’ that I wore on my wedding day and it’s one of the most special pieces of jewellery I own.

Another super-cool gift is a custom bride leather jacket that the bride can wear in the evening over her dress. It adds a rock-chick element to her outfit and will help to keep the bride warm if the temperature drops. My friend wore one with her new ‘Mrs Surname’ on the back but you could choose one customised with the words ‘Just Married’ or ‘Together we made it’. Matching his ‘n’ hers floral jackets would be the ultimate after-party attire for the wedding day.
Also, bridal designs look lovely on paler colour leather such as white, ivory or pastels. Or you could simply have the wedding date printed or embroidered under the collar of a black leather jacket for a personalized touch – and she’ll be able to wear the jacket time and again in the future.
Gifts for the honeymoon
Often, couples like to head away on honeymoon after their wedding and they’ll certainly be travelling somewhere new during the first year of their marriage. So a special piece of luggage would be a very thoughtful and useful gift for the couple.
Again, I would suggest upping the luxuriousness of the gift by choosing an opulent leather piece, which will stand the test of time and will be their go-to travelling accessory for years to come. In order to make it a his & hers gift, choose a couple of pieces that can coordinate as a pair and also be used individually.
I like the idea of a compact leather backpack that’s the ideal size to use as a carry-on bag, as well as for exploring when the couple reach their destination. Pair this with a roomier duffle bag and they’ll be able to pack for weekend getaways with ease, and will remember your kind gesture whenever they use the gifts for their adventures.

Gift for the first year of marriage
I’m a firm believer in giving experiences rather than things – let’s face it, we’ve all got a house full of items and probably don’t need any of the traditional wedding gifts of crockery, kitchenwares and picture frames etc. So why is a gift experience voucher an ideal ‘his and hers’ gift?
Choosing a Newlywed Experience Voucher gives the couple the chance to plan a luxurious date during their first year of marriage. After all, there’s no need to stop dating just because you’re married! A voucher that can be used for a variety of experiences, such as spa treats, glamping getaways and meals out is the ideal option.
I bought an experience voucher as a gift for my own sister when she got married last year so I know how much she enjoyed receiving it. Plus, it’s nice for the bride and groom to have something to look forward to – they’ve just spent months preparing for and anticipating their big day, so the experience voucher will give them the chance to put an exciting activity in the calendar for them to enjoy post-honeymoon.
