I secretly love Valentine’s Day. It’s a lovely thing to look forward to after the new year, while we’re struggling through the grey days of winter. This year, it falls on a Friday so it’s the perfect time to get together with that special someone, either for a cosy evening at home or for a romantic weekend chilling out together.
There’s no need to go over the top with all the Valentine’s themed gifts you’ll find in the shops, but having a little celebration that you and your partner can enjoy together is a sweet idea – and it’s a good excuse for a little foodie treat or a thoughtful gift.
Here are some ideas that show them you care without breaking the bank…
Perfect perfume
It’s such a lovely tradition to buy perfume for your partner on Valentine’s Day. I remember the first Valentine’s Day that I celebrated with my husband and he bought me a bottle of my favourite perfume, along with a gorgeous floating heart necklace, that I still wear to this day.
Buying perfume is quite a personal thing – some scents that you love will not be right on another person’s skin. However, you can’t go wrong by treating them to their favourite fragrance. Simply check their dressing table or bathroom cabinet to find out their top perfumes and stock up on that scent.
Alternatively, if you want to treat them to something new, perhaps a perfume that they’ve talked about but haven’t tried yet, it’s possible to get fragrance samples so they can try it before you splash out on the full-sized bottle.
You can get samples of the bestselling designer brands and celebrity products such as the latest Ariana Grande perfume online for a fraction of the price of a full bottle. You can get a few samples delivered to you in time for Valentine’s Day and can then organise a ‘testing session’ for your loved one, so they can try them all and choose a new favourite.
How to DIY a hamper
I’m such a fan of hampers when it comes to special occasions. That’s because you can completely personalise the gift so that it suits your partner perfectly. It’s usually made up of lots of low-cost items that can be combined into one luxurious present. But because you’ve made it yourself, it’s going to cost considerably less than buying a hamper from a gift company.
The key to creating a custom hamper is to present it beautifully in a gorgeous basket, box or bag tied with ribbon. Adding tissue paper or shredded gift wrap into the hamper adds a sense of excitement – the recipient won’t be able to see what’s in the basket all at once, allowing them to discover more and more treats as they delve deeper into it.
I’ve previously shared an article on how to DIY a customised gift hamper for any occasion so check that out for more ideas.
Celebration cake
I often suggest edible gifts for special occasions, as you never know if someone already has an item you’re planning to buy, and it would be a waste of money if you wrap up something they don’t need or love. Whereas, any foodie treats you choose can be consumed and won’t take up valuable space in their home.
I love the idea of getting a sweet treat personalised for your loved one, so I’d suggest a custom-made cake. This sounds like an expensive option but it doesn’t have to be – you can get cake toppers printed online or you can even go into your local Asda and get a special design added to one of their classic sponge cakes.
For this gift, you can add a photo of the two of you to the cake, add a border or a romantic message. And wouldn’t it be a cute way to ask someone to marry you? If your intended fiance loves cake as much as I do, they’ll definitely think it’s a sweet idea.

Delicious drinks
Again, sticking with the idea that it’s best not to clutter up someone’s home with unwanted items, another consumable that makes a real treat is a bottle of something boozy or bubbly.
Prosecco, champagne or English sparkling wines always feel celebratory – and you’ll definitely need one if you’re planning to propose – but I also like the idea of choosing something truly treat-worthy, something they wouldn’t buy for themselves.
I’d suggest going for a bottle of their favourite spirit but with a luxurious twist. Something like a flavoured rum, a small batch spirit or a beautifully packaged Bathtub Gin. This way, the bottle will last them longer than simply popping some bubbly, so they’ll get enjoyment out of it for a longer period and it’s therefore better value for money.
