Fashion is ever-changing, with trends coming and going every season. As nice as it is to follow the latest trends, they can date easily and allow you to get swept up into the world of ‘fast fashion.’ The key to saving money while still looking great is to work on creating a classic and timeless wardrobe. By doing this, you’re ready for practically any occasion life can throw at you. Here’s 8 style staples to get you started…

Building a timeless wardrobe is all about having a collection of foundation pieces. You need key items to last longer than a single season, acting as staple garments to create the base of an outfit you can layer up. The minimalist concept of building a closet full of staples is really appealing to me. You should aim for your closet to be constructed from a streamlined selection of items which make daily dressing and mixing and matching easy.

A PLAIN WHITE TEE

There is nothing more versatile than a plain white t-shirt. A round neck, short sleeve style works well with a pair of jeans, a flowing skirt, a camisole dress and pretty much any jacket or coat you choose to throw over it.

DARK SKINNY JEANS

Believe me when I say the darker the denim, the better. This is because not only are darker shades more flattering for the figure, but they show up stains less and don’t need to be washed constantly. And no one enjoys washing and ironing jeans! A skinny fit style is on trend year after year, becoming one of the most versatile items you can own that’ll look great with all the tops suggestions above.

A SMART BLAZER

If your wardrobe features a nicely fitted smart blazer, you’ll find you will turn to this for a range of different occasions. Whether it be a smart look for the office, the perfect cover up for an evening out or a spring/summer wedding, or for those in-between days when it’s not quite cold enough for a thick coat. Black, cream or grey make great classic colour choices.

A CASHMERE CARDIGAN

There are very few pieces in a wardrobe that are more versatile than a cashmere cardigan. Due to their softness and warmth, these make great items for layering over camisole tops and t-shirts, as well as bringing ultimate comfort. Long length cardigans are essential for the winter, with waist length cardigans are handy for all year round. You can find an array of styles over at Statecashmere.com, in some classic colours like grey, white and black.

TAILORED BLACK TROUSERS

A simple pair of tailored black trousers are a go-to item for any look you wish to achieve. Pair with a shirt for that important work meeting or tuck a loose graphic print t-shirt into them for a smart-casual feel — a Monday to Sunday style staple.

COMFY FLAT PUMPS

You can’t beat a comfy pair of ballet style flat pumps when it comes to your footwear collection. They look both chic and comfortable and can be dressed up or dressed down. They make a perfect choice for weekends out shopping, yet also look fabulous paired with skinny jeans and a blazer for after work drinks.

A STRIPED TOP

The nautical fashion theme never dates, with the classic Breton-stripe top ruling the fashion trends year after year. Team with a pair of laid-back denim jeans, a midi skirt or denim shorts – the looks are endless here. Stripes never go out of fashion, and the beauty is you can opt for navy and white or black and white, as both pair up easily with a wide range of items.

CLASSIC BLACK DRESS

Note here that i haven’t used the term ‘LBD,’ purely because the black dress doesn’t have to be little. It can be long, midi, flowing – the choice is yours. Just as long as it is jet black in colour, of high quality and represents a timeless, classic look. This way, it will never date and can always be relied on to whip out for those evening occasions. A classic black dress has saved women many a time when being stuck on what to wear!

The bottom line: Wardrobe staples never change. Fill your wardrobe with these basic items above, and you can guarantee you will still be getting wear out of them in years to come. Let me know your favourite wardrobe must-haves in the comments below 🙂
