Filming locations of Ed Sheeran’s music video for ‘Under the Tree’ from ‘That Christmas’

If you want to find the filming locations of Ed Sheeran's music video for his festive tune 'Under the Tree', here's all you need to know about where the coastal scenes were shot by Richard Curtis...

It’s been an exciting time on the Suffolk coast as Ed Sheeran was recently spotted filming the music video for his ‘Under the Tree’, from the soundtrack of the epic animation ‘That Christmas’.

The video has now been released on YouTube, so you can enjoy the scenes in the clip below and read on to find out the exact locations where this was filmed.

The music video for ‘Under the Tree’ was directed by Richard Curtis and stars Bridgerton actor Claudia Jessie alongside Ed.

The song features on the soundtrack of ‘That Christmas’, the fabulous animated festive film based on the book by Richard Curtis and Peter Souter. I spotted the book in the Southwold Bookshop recently, which comes as no surprise because…

The coastal shots where you can see Ed walking along the beach beside crashing waves were filmed at Southwold! You can spot the famous pier and the groynes in the background of the blustery scene. With its shops, cafe and Tim Hunkin’s traditional automata arcade, the pier is definitely worth a visit while you’re checking out these filming locations.

Take a stroll further along the prom to walk in Ed & Claudia’s footsteps. The scenes where they are wandering along together are shot looking towards the pier-end of the promenade here, with the turquoise beach huts at the end of the row.

The beach hut is also on the seafront in this lovely Suffolk seaside town. You can recognise it from the behind-the-scenes photos that Ed shared on Instagram – its plaque has a little row of beach huts on it. See if you can spot it for yourself along the promenade here…

If you wander into Southwold town centre, you can also find the exterior of Little Gems grocery store, which is on Market Place. If you visit the town in December, you’ll spot the Christmas trees in the centre of the market square and all the shops swagged in garlands of greenery. So festive.

Also, a lighthouse features in the animated movie ‘That Christmas’ and is said to be based on the lighthouse in Southwold. You can see the lighthouse for yourself by looking up from the beach or the entrance to the lighthouse is on Stradbroke Road, opposite the Sole Bay Inn.

In fact, a lot of the scenes in the town of Wellington-On-Sea, the fictional town in ‘That Christmas’ were based on locations in Southwold and Walberswick. You can definitely spot a likeless in the scenes of the streets, market square, shops, beach huts, sand dunes and so on..!

Local intel confirms that Ed Sheeran’s music video shoot took place at the start of November so it has been a quick turnaround from filming the scenes to the music video being launched. It’s also been said that the interior and Christmas tree yard scenes were filmed at a private property on the other side of the River Blyth in Walberswick.

What I found most amazing is that Claudia Jessie, who plays my favourite Bridgerton character Eloise, was in Southwold filming with Ed Sheeran. That’s a super-cool fact for Bridgerton fan like me! I hope the whole cast and crew enjoyed visiting this quaint coastal town and will return in the future.

Merry Christmas!
