After attending a wedding fair this weekend with my bride-to-be bestie, I started thinking about honeymoon destinations. We were browsing the wedding fair stalls when we came across a stand covered in photos of dream honeymoon locations and it got me thinking about where I’d like to go, if I could choose anywhere in the world. My husband and I never really had a proper honeymoon when we got married all those years ago – in fact, I’ve only been out of the country a handful of times – so I’d think that now we be an excellent time to start saving for that dream holiday; our first proper ‘honeymoon’.
Back when we got married, we had a mini-moon; just a couple of days away in Paris. The day after the wedding we tidied up, on the second day we went to a Fab Beatles gig not far from home, and on the third day we hopped on the Eurostar. We spent two nights in a non-air-conditioned room during the hottest summer Paris had seen for a generation. Checking out the sights, going up the Eiffel Tower and eating lots of croissants was lovely but it was over all too soon. We said at the time that we’d have a long, luxurious honeymoon ‘one day’ but after nearly 13 years that ‘one day’ hasn’t yet arrived!
So now that I’m sat in front of my computer with time on my hands, I’ve started browsing online for that dream honeymoon destination. Where would you recommend?
Hubby’s preference is definitely for a city-break in the hustle and bustle of New York but I think that a honeymoon is very different to a holiday. It needs to be somewhere idyllic, with gorgeous weather and nothing to do. It should be calming, with gorgeous views and packed with nature.
Ever since I read (and watched) Eat, Prey, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, I’ve had my eye on Bali. It looks like such a gorgeous, lush island and the combination of mountains and volcanoes with sandy beaches and tropical habitats is what makes it a dream destination for me. The pace of life seems really calm and the island is packed full of relaxing spas, retreats and luxurious accommodation – just right for a chilled-out honeymoon with nothing to do and nowhere to go!
I was browsing the Flight Centre honeymoon section when, in amongst all the Dubai hotels and Jamaican resorts, I found my dream location – award-winning villas in Bali. This spa resort won a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2015 and comprises of 24 villas with private pools and gazebos, close to Mount Batur. And I couldn’t believe it when the price of this break was about half that the cost of the other honeymoons I’d previously looked at! Here are just a few magical honeymoon treats you can enjoy in Bali:
- Enjoy a Balinese massage in the spa
- Take a shuttle bus to explore the cultural capital Ubud
- Check out the 2500 fish species that live around the island with a diving session
- Learn about Balinese art and culture in the 25+ museums on the island
- Visit the beautiful white sandy beaches for a day of paddling in the ocean and reading in the shade
- Watch traditional Balinese dances, ceremonies and celebrations
Sounds like a dream destination, doesn’t it? I had a good look at the Bali Tourism website and found out lots of activities to do and places to explore. If I was ever going to have a ‘proper’ honeymoon, this would be it! But where would you go on your dream honeymoon? What kind of activities would you like to do? What sights are on your ‘must-see’ list? Let me know by leaving me a comment below or tweeting me @Cassiefairy.

Ooh lovely, that’s so great to know Sarah – you can never really tell what a place is like just from researching online so it’s wonderful to hear that it’s as nice as the Indonesia tourist website says! Glad you had a great time x

Bali would be beautiful! I would recommend Sri Lanka … my husband and I went there last year and it was a life-changing experience. It has everything: delicious food, luxurious spas, amazing culture, gorgeous beaches, and lots of opportunities to spot wildlife too!
That does look idyllic for definite!
My new husband and I decided to go on a Caribbean cruise in a few weeks time – I’ll let you know how our honeymoon goes if you like but I can tell you now that it’ll have lots of sun and food! 😉 so excited
