When you think of a cosy home at Christmas, what do you imagine? I expect whatever you’re seeing in your mind’s eye is rather similar to while I’m thinking of. There’s the glow of low lighting, lots of soft textures, a roaring fire and steaming cups of hot chocolate on the coffee table. Am I right? Even if that wasn’t what you were picturing, I bet you like the idea of it now, eh?! Here are my tips for creating a gloriously cosy ambience in your home this winter.
1. A WARM HOME
Now you can’t create a cosy feeling without a little warmth, can you? So heating is one of the key features of any winter home. Get that fireplace lit and create a snug fug of warm air in your living room. Some essential pieces you’ll need for this are a set of traditional fireplace tools. How else will you stoke the fire when it’s died down to embers? Plus, always make sure there’s a fully-stocked basket of logs bedside the fireplace so that it’s easy to keep the fire burning all evening long.
2. ENTERTAINING
When guests come round to visit you over the festive period, there’s nothing better than pouring a cup of tea and munching on a mince pie. Make sure your tea set if suitably Christmassy by choosing a pretty red and white design. Anything that looks a little scandi works well at this time of year, but it can be used throughout the rest of the year too, whereas a holly-leaf tea set can only really come out in December. And keep your coffee table stocked with a bowl of nuts, tin of biscuits and a pretty festive floral display.
3. AMBIENCE
Lighting is also very important when you’re planning out a cosy living space. I’d say that the lower the lighting, the better. Many sources of lighting from table lamps, floor lamps and, of course, fairy lights can create pools of light around the room that draw you in and make you want to snuggle down on the sofa for a cosy evening in. Harsh bright lights just don’t have that same effect. Exposed edison light bulbs look super-vintage and give off a warm golden light.
4. VINTAGE PIECES
I think it’s essential to have pieces of furniture with patina and texture in your home if you want to create a cosy space. Glossy melamine cabinets just don’t have the same feeling as the scrubbed wood and leather of vintage furniture. If you’ve already got a modern sofa, you can make it feel more traditional and inviting by draping over sheepskin throws and adding plenty of soft, squishy cushions. This will make visitors feel more included to sit down and linger for longer in your cosy home. All these beautiful cosy-home images were sourced from PIB Home.
