Cosy clothing to prepare you for cold and wet winter weather

Fellwalker Alfred Wainwright once said "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing." Seeing as the Met Office have said that the UK has experienced more weather extremes (both hot and cold) in recent years, I've decided to prepare myself for a nippy winter ahead. Here's what you need to stay cosy in the cold...

Brrr it’s getting chilly isn’t it? I’m sure it wasn’t this cold last year in November – or even in December, for that matter! The Met Office have said that the UK has experienced more weather extremes (both hot and cold) in recent years so, after the scorching hot summer, I’ve decided to prepare myself for a nippy winter ahead. Here’s what I’ve invested in…

Fellwalker Alfred Wainwright once said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” And while I was out at a freezing cold bonfire night yesterday, I was so glad that I’d stocked up on toasty of winter clothing this week…

After a couple of cold days in October, I couldn’t take it any more. I started searching online for skiing accessories to keep me warm this winter. I figured that, if clothing can withstand being out in the snow and still keep you warm, it’s got to be good. I found myself on the Simply Hike website after landing on the ski helmets page (great prices, by the way, if you’re in the market for a ski helmet) and I spotted that there was a sale on. Here’s what I picked up…

ESSENTIAL UNDERLAYER

During ‘the beast from the east’ earlier this year, I found myself piling on the layers and even wearing leggings underneath my jeans. It certainly helped me to stay warmer so I’ve been keen to get a proper thermal base layer ever since. This women’s insulate base layer set from Dare2B is in the sale, reduced to almost half price. It certainly appreciated this extra layer of warmth when I was waiting for the fireworks display to start last night – cosy!

WINTER WOOLIES

I don’t know where my hats, gloves and scarves go from one year to the next but I can never find them when the temperature drops. So I also bought a couple of woolies to keep me warm. This patterned beanie hat by Dakine has a cute pompom and is super-snug. For only £7 in the sale, you can’t go wrong, can you?The only thing is that I think it’s out of stock now, which just goes to show that if you see something you like in the sale, buy it straight away!

After wrestling with long scarves last year, I decided that a neck gaitor would be more practical. This Dare2B cable knit gaitor has a thermal lining and tucks neatly into my jacket without adding bulk. Plus, it was less than a fiver so I’m happy with my bargain neck warmer! No drafts were getting down my neck during bonfire night!

WET WEATHER WELLIES

I already have a pair of short wellies (so easy to put on and take off) so I was ready to traipse across the playing field to watch the fireworks last night. But my husband doesn’t have any waterproof footwear. Until now, that is! I bought him some Derwent wellies from the Muck Boot Company, which are waterproof, can be used in sub-zero temperatures, have an insulated sock and breathable mesh lining. Although they weren’t in the sale, the prices on Simply Hike are already discounted from the RRP so hubby still got a bargain!

What other winter weather essentials do you think I should add to my shopping list? What cosy clothes do you swear by in the cold? Let me know in the comments below so that I can be prepared if the beast from the east makes a repeat appearance this winter!
