DIY project – Make a rustic basket decoration for Christmas

Here’s a super-easy, super-quick idea for making a Christmas basket decoration with pretty sparkling fairy lights. This would be perfect if you had an unused fireplace space in your living room to give a festive focal point to the space – or use outdoor fairy lights and sit it outside your front door or in your porch to welcome visitors over the festive period.

Grab any kind of basket, or even a wooden box, wine crate or empty planter and fill with a few logs before adding your choice of fairy lights. I chose these multi-combination sparkling fairy lights from Dunelm Mill in a warm white colour to resemble candle light and make the whole display feel warm – but you can change the look of the display by using ice white or blue to look more like snow, or use multi-coloured fairy lights for a party effect! Then add more pretty logs or tree branches, a layer of pine cones to cover the wire of the fairy lights and pop in a few sprigs of evergreen foliage. I nipped out into the garden and cut a couple of pieces of holly, ivy and pine, but you can use anything you have in the garden or even a couple of small stems snipped from your real christmas tree.

Position as a focal point in your festive living room or pop outside the front door and enjoy your festive display as it gets dusk and the lights sparkle brightly. I actually think that this kind of display would look good all year round too! Let me know if you give this Christmas project a go – I’ve love to see your version!
