A blog that I’ve followed for many years is Apartment Apothecary. It’s written by interior design consultant Katy Orme and it’s provided me with endless inspiration for decorating my own home.
So, when I was looking for a characterful interior to feature in issue 72 of Reclaim last year, I knew Katy’s home would be inspirational to the magazine’s readers.
Katy’s style oozes warmth and individuality. Although the palette is often kept neutral, her interiors are anything but bare. She cleverly layers textiles, colours, artwork and furniture to create a cosy yet calm home.
Her spaces speak to my minimalist tendencies – I love a tidy home where everything has its place – but it’s never stark; rustic wooden finishes bring natural texture, along with linen covers, woven rugs and an abundance of cosy cushions.
I would call her rooms relaxed – the simplicity of the design means you can take a breath and truly relax in the uncluttered spaces. Yet, the interiors still offer details that make a house a home – the lush house plants, personal collections and vintage pieces.
I also love Katy’s subtle use of colour. Kitchen cabinets are painted in ‘Railings’ by Farrow and Ball for a modern look in the kitchen, while ‘Light Blue’ on the fireplace brings an airy feel to the Scandi-styling living room.
Deep ‘Inchyra Blue’ in the hallway creates an instantly welcoming feel and makes the scrubbed wood on the original doors and staircase look extra warm and rustic. Plus, I love checkerboard flooring and the inky blue woodwork provides a sleek contrast.
The hall leads seamlessly into the dining room with its mossy green walls, inherited terrarium and reupholstered chair in ‘Willow’ by William Morris. This combination helps to bring the outside in and enhance the natural feel that flows throughout the house.
Also, the cabinet in the alcove is a fantastic IKEA hack. Katy painted a Billy cupboard in the same colour as the walls, giving it a barely-there look. It’s a handy space for keeping knick-knacks organised for a fuss-free interior.
The master bedroom is one of my favourite spaces in Katy’s home. It’s similar in style to my own bedroom, with pared-back linens and clutter-free bedside tables. Again, she manages to make the space feel extra cosy with a tumble of cushions and low lighting.
