When headlines about the weather start shouting about record temperatures for September and a possible SIXTH heatwave, I find myself hunting for ways to stay cool without hiding indoors all day. And honestly, a heatwave can be a brilliant excuse to try something new that doesn’t involve sunburn or sticky clothes.
That’s why I’ve come up with a few alternative ideas for staying cool when temperatures soar, both this summer and beyond. You can check items off this list during your next holiday or even next spring when the sun starts shining again.

Snow Centres: The Ultimate Cool‑Down
There’s something wonderfully rebellious about stepping into a snow centre when the world outside feels like a toaster. The moment that cold air hits your face, you feel like you’ve discovered a secret portal to winter.
You could try skiing or snowboarding lessons, enjoy a skate around an ice rink or just sledge down an indoor slope. It’ll feel weird to be putting on a big coat in August, but you’ll be pretty smug staying super-cool while it’s sweltering outside.
A snow-based activity is a fun way to spend time together too, especially if you’re looking for date ideas or family days out that don’t involve sweating through your outfit. Wobbly skating, shared giggles, and the occasional dramatic glide make it feel extra fun.

Chill Out with Frozen Treat Trails
If you’re anything like me, you don’t need much convincing to go on a hunt for ice cream. Turn it into a little challenge: try a new gelato shop, compare sorbets or find the best iced coffee within a few miles.
It’s simple, affordable, and surprisingly memorable – especially when you discover a flavour you never knew existed. Plus, it’s one of the easiest ways to cool down without needing to go too far or spend too much.

Shady Woodland Wandering
When the sun feels relentless, a leafy woodland becomes the ideal escape. The temperature in the shade is much lower than in the sun, and I’ve even found myself shade hopping in cities on holidays to escape a 40+ degree heat this year.
So, look up your local woodland, pack a cold drink, wander slowly through the forest and enjoy the feeling of being tucked away from the heat. It’s peaceful, grounding and perfect for chatting without melting in the sun. Plus, you can spot the seasons changing in the colours of the trees – we’re already seeing autumn leaves coming through.

Dip Your Toes in
You don’t need a full beach day to enjoy the water and NEVER jump into cold open water thinking you’ll cool off; the news is full of tragedies when people have done this. That said, there’s something nostalgic about dangling just your feet in cool water while the sun blazes overhead.
A shallow riverbed, the shore of a quiet lake, or even taking a safe swim at a local outdoor lido can feel like bliss when the heatwave peaks. It’s the kind of romantic moment that you and your loved one will both remember long after summer ends (especially if it’s part of a summer proposal..!).
Also, for a peaceful way to cool off in the water, you could head to a local spa. They’re sure to have a cold plunge pool, cool rainfall shower or an ice bath that you can climb into after a swim-and-sauna session. I loved sploshing my husband with the huge cold water bucket at the spa we went to on holiday!

Indoor Adventures with Air‑Con
Museums, galleries, cinemas – these places become absolute havens during a heatwave. You get culture, entertainment and cool air all at once. It’s also a great way to try something different without planning a big day out – just head somewhere local for a quick cool-off.
And if you’re looking for low‑pressure date ideas, wandering around an exhibition together is a lovely way to connect. You don’t need to make eye contact throughout the date and you won’t be short of things to chat about.
Churches are always the coolest places in any city. Whenever I’m on holiday, I always find myself drawn inside the dark, cool stone interiors of the local church and there’s always something interesting to see in there – an impressive pip organ, amazing stained glass windows illuminated by the sun and sometimes an exhibition, too.

The Wind in Your Hair
While there might not be much of an actual breeze caused by the weather at the moment, it IS possible to feel the wind in your hair this summer. I’ll say just two words to you: indoor skydiving.
This activity involves giant fans blowing you up into the air, where you can float and even do tricks as you cool off. If you’ve been sitting in front of a desk fan all summer, this one is for you!

Try a Frosty Recipe
If you’re stuck at home, try making your own iced drinks, frozen fruit snacks, snow cones or even homemade ice lollies. It’s surprisingly fun, and you get to enjoy the results immediately.
Pop on some music, experiment with flavours, and make an afternoon of it. There are plenty of recipe ideas out there for healthy frozen snacks, so it’s a lovely treat to try with your friends that feels refreshing in more ways than one.

Heatwaves can feel oppressive and overwhelming, but they’re also a chance to slow down, cool off and enjoy experiences you might not try otherwise. Whether you’re gliding around an ice rink, exploring shady woodland, or taste‑testing frozen treats, these chilly activities can turn a sweltering day into something special.
I hope this inspires you to stay cool, have fun and make the most of the sunshine without overheating. If you’ve got your own favourite heatwave activities, please share them in the comments, I’d love to get some more ideas to cool down this month.
