How to create a ‘smart’ bedroom with the latest tech

Collaborative feature

Are you looking for a decorating project to take on in your home this season? If so, you might want to think about remodeling and redesigning your bedroom. When we think about the most important rooms in our home, we often go straight to the kitchen or the bathroom. In a way, this makes a lot of sense because the bathroom and kitchen have the most potential if you want to add value to your home. But what if you’re after more than that?

Let’s not forget that the bedroom is the perfect place for relaxing and you need to make sure it’s set up right if you want a good night of sleep. As such, it is important to think about your bedroom design.  I’m currently decorating my own bedroom at the moment. So far I’ve painted the whole room, laid new flooring, my new bed has arrived and I’ve picked out some brightly coloured bedding. There’s still wallpapering to be done and a wardrobe to be fitted so watch this space!

Of course, if you’re aiming for a complete remodel, there’s more to think about than just the basics. There are plenty of fun (and luxurious!) features you can add to your bedroom that will certainly make it an incredible part of your home. Let’s start off by thinking about a feature that a lot of people would love in their bedroom.

Step Inside Your Wardrobe

If we’re looking at the most sought-after luxury bedroom features, a walk in wardrobe would certainly top the list. The easiest way to give yourself a walk in wardrobe is to build one inside the room, rather than knocking through the wall of your bedroom. Of course, this is going to limit the size of your room, but if you have quite a large open space for your bedroom, it might be worth it. Particularly if it gives you a place where you can store everything all in once place. You’ll need to think about lighting too, and LED strips are great for running around the ceiling of your wardrobe and lighting up shelves. Well, there’s no point in having a walk in wardrobe if you can’t see anything once you step inside, is there?!

You probably have a lot of ideas for your own walk in wardrobe. But the trick is to make sure that everything is easy to see and completely accessible. You should be able to step in and immediately find the outfit you’re looking for. One of the ways to do this by having an electronic system that moves the clothes around as you open the door. Honestly, it’s not just something from the film Clueless – I’ve seen a system like this at Grand Designs Live and now I want one myself! It’s a cool feature for sure, but one that will need intricate engineering work to get right!

Gorgeous floors

Gone are the days where bedrooms needed to be carpeted. These days, you can get hardwood floors in your bedroom, laminate or even stone. Of course, some of these are going to be expensive, but they also have their benefits. Through the summer months, stone and hardwood floors will keep your bedroom quite cool, reflecting the sunlight. They are also significantly easier to clean which is always beneficial if you want a home that is quite low maintenance. As well as this, hardwood floors will look absolutely stunning and add to a minimalistic design. They can even make your bedroom look quite contemporary and the perfect area in a modern home. I laid white wood laminate flooring in my bedroom and I love it!

If you are worried about the costs, you may want to look at aesthetic materials. For instance, you can get flooring that looks like marble stone but is nowhere near the cost. It’s just as durable, and no one will be able to tell the difference. Do consider the downstairs though if you select a choice like this – you want to be careful to avoid footsteps echoing through the home so might need to get some suitable underlay or sound-proofing solutions!

Lights on, lights off

There’s a lot of fun that you can have with the lights in your bedroom. For instance, get a clapper. Quite old tech these days but still fun, you can switch off your lights simply with the clap of your hands. A modern version of this tech would be automated voice technology. By saying ‘lights off’ the lights will switch off – no more getting out of bed to turn off the ‘big light’!

You can also look into installing automatic blinds or curtains at your windows to let the daylight pour in through the windows in the mornings. This idea reminds me of Kate Winslet closing the automatic blinds in the LA house in The Holiday – I’ve always wanted something like this! Do you struggle to get up in the morning? Well, with automatic blinds or curtains it’s easy because they’ll open to let in the sun at the time when you need to get out of bed. And if you want an extra snooze, you can use the remote to override the system. These days this tech isn’t that rare and it’s just one of the possible features that you can play with in the bedroom.

A good night

Of course, if your biggest issue currently with your bedroom is a lack of sleep, you need to think about changing your bed. Your bed can have a huge impact on how well you sleep at night. If you’re constantly restless, tossing and turning that certainly points to an issue with the bed. I recently upgraded my mattress and got a new bed frame and it’s made the world of difference to how I sleep.

Modern beds can be stylish, cleverly designed, contain tech products and create the perfect environment specifically for you. Have you heard of ‘smart beds’ before? These can actually tell you how you’ve been sleeping and what you need to do to improve the situation. Some will even adjust themselves to give you the best night of sleep possible. If you have a look at a company such as John Ryan by Design, you’ll see they have a lot of different types of beds. At least one of them will be the perfect fit for your sleeping habits and behaviour. You might, for instance, want a memory foam mattress, which is exactly what I went for. It’s a smart choice if your current mattress is a little hard on your back.

Personal touches

Finally, you can think about adding a few little accessories to your bedroom to make it a touch more personal to you.  For instance, you add some art pieces that would look fantastic above the headboard of your bed. Or you can purchase a beautiful throw to dress up your bed a little more. Okay, you might not need anything ‘techy’ in this department – I think fairy lights are as exciting as bedroom decor gets! A couple of scatter cushions and a cosy bedroom armchair could be exactly what you need to give your bedroom a more luxurious feel and make it look complete.

I hope you have fun using some of these ideas to reinvent your bedroom this season and let me know if you decorate your own home – I’d love to hear what you get up to in the comments section below. My own bedroom is still a work-in-progress so I’ll be sharing some more updates on my blog soon 🙂
