I understand that your dog, cat, rabbit or any other animal is an important part of your family – my cats are my whole world and always will be.
So, I also know that you want to keep your pets in tip-top condition; feeling comfortable, calm and healthy throughout their lives.
And, honestly, that’s an easy goal to achieve. Just a few simple pet-care habits can make a big difference to your pet’s wellbeing. The bonus is that this will also save you money in the long term by minimising the chances of larger vets bills.
Here are 5 things you can do to help your pets stay healthy and happy…

1. Regular Check‑Ups Keep Costs Down
It probably goes without saying, but those routine check-ups with your local vets are essential in helping to spot little gripes before they turn into bigger issues or expensive emergencies.
When your vet knows your pet well, they can give personalised advice that keeps problems at bay. Plus, it makes visits to the veterinary clinic less stressful for both you and your furry friend.
My beloved cat developed a thyroid condition that would have been a big problem if left untreated, but my vet recognised it early and was able to suggest a way to solve it through her diet.
This prevented the problem from developing further without the need for expensive operations or treatments – just a few pounds for her to have the best food to support her condition, and she loved it!
These yearly check-ups are like giving your pet an MOT and means you won’t be blindsided by an unexpected expense, so put that appointment in your calendar.

2. Vaccinations and Boosters Protect Your Budget
Keeping up with your pet’s vaccinations while they’re having their check-up means they’ll be protected from illnesses that can be costly to treat. It’s a case of spending a little now to save a lot of money later.
Likewise, fleas, ticks and worms can cause pricey complications if left unchecked. A simple monthly treatment keeps your pet comfortable and can be included in the pet care section of your monthly budget planner so the expense is covered.

3. Nutrition and Exercise Plays a Huge Role
Not necessarily in terms of the special dietary food my cat needed – more like simply feeding your pet the correct portions of healthy meals and giving them access to fresh water. This can help prevent obesity, digestive issues and long‑term health problems.
Good nutrition doesn’t have to be expensive, but do your research and check the ingredients. There are often different formulas for younger pets and mature pets, with balanced nutrients to suit their requirements throughout their lives.
Combine a healthy diet with daily walks or play sessions to help maintain your pet’s weight and overall health. Just like with humans, helping your furry pals to stay active is one of the simplest ways to avoid future medical costs.

4. Dental Care Avoids Big Vet Bills
I’ve heard about huge expenses being incurred for pet dentistry – not to mention the discomfort your animal may feel. But there are easy ways to keep their teeth in great condition and help prevent issues that often need costly treatment.
Depending on your pet, they can enjoy dental chews, treats or a paste to clean their teeth. Plus, a quick brush with the correct device designed for cats or dogs can help their mouths stay healthy. It’s such an easy habit and your pet will thank you for it.

5. Planning Ahead With Pet Insurance
Finally, you can consider pet insurance. Sure, it can feel like just another extra expense to add to your monthly budget, but it often saves you money when unexpected issues arise and can ensure your pet gets the treatment they need, even if you haven’t budgeted for it.
Just be careful to check the policy details before you buy it. As my cats got older, the insurance kept adding things to the list of conditions that weren’t covered, so you need to make sure their treatments will be met by the insurance if ever needed.

Keeping your pets healthy isn’t about doing everything perfectly but these monthly and yearly pet-care routines can help keep your animals stay happy and calm, as well as protecting your bank balance.
