My bathroom renovation project: The (low-cost + DIY!) finishing touches

In order to turn a bathroom from a sterile white box into a welcoming spa-like space, all you need to do is add some accessories. Here are a few thrifty ideas to get you started…You may remember that I’ve been giving my own bathroom a makeover for a while now. To be honest, it was a complete renovation project (just look at the horrid ‘before’ photos!) and we’ve nearly reached the finishing line. It’s just those homely touches that I still need to add to make the room more welcoming (and practical!) so here are a few things I’ve added – or am planning to add – this month.

STORAGE

I haven’t had any kind of cupboard space in the bathroom so far, and that means my bottles of shampoo etc have just been stored on the shelf or windowsill. While that’s a perfectly suitable place to store toiletries, it does make the bathroom look somewhat messy. And, seeing as I could install a bathroom cabinet to house all these bits and pieces, it’s something that I can sort out easily. I’m planning a cabinet upcycling project so watch this space for a new DIY soon.

METALWORK

After installing the suite and tiles, the next step is adding things like towel rails and a toilet roll holder next to my powerful toilet. I wanted some very simple chrome accessories so that it didn’t clash with the taps or detract from the suite. I found what I needed at Ironmongery Experts, where they have a whole range of bathroom fittings, including towel rings, wire storage baskets and the robe hooks that I’ve added to the back of the bathroom door. I’ve yet to fix up the loo roll holder – but at least I have one now!

ACCESSORIES

Dispensing cotton wool and wipes etc into little pots and jars make the whole room look much tidier and more put together. I’ve upcycled a mason jar to house my cotton wool pads, and this cork-lidded glass pot from Habitat is ideal for buds. I’ve brought in some candles to get that spa-like vibe and have added some fluffy new (very low-cost) duck-egg blue towels that I got from Primark. They coordinate with the John Lewis bath mat I already owned.

PLANTS

Okay, you’ve caught me – these plants aren’t real. I guess you’d already know that if you’ve read my recent blog post on the joys of faux plants! I made these little planters to bring a splash of fresh colour into the room and just popped some tiny artificial succulents into the top. The pots are those suction cup tooth brush holders you can get from places like B&M or the Factory Shop and I just filled them with sand around the edges. If you’re going to make these yourself, be sure to create a hollow space in the centre packed out with cardboard, otherwise the pots would be too heavy to suction onto the wall if entirely filled with sand.So what do you think of my bathroom now that it’s been dressed up with a few accessories?
