If you want to reduce the running costs of your home and enjoy lower gas and electricity bills, here are four ways to save money quickly and easily…Are you a monthly payer? A quarterly payer? Are you on the meter? However you choose to pay for the energy that your home consumes, the simple fact of the matter is that you do indeed pay for it when you use it. Luckily there are a few top tips out there on how to reduce your energy bill without compromising on style and taste – after all, a generator powered by a compost heap the size of an airfield is probably going to upset the neighbours as well as your family’s image. Let’s kick things off with an easy one that I’ve been getting into recently: eco friendly bulbs.
LOWER LIGHTING COSTS
Once you start researching light bulbs, you can really go down a rabbit hole of choice. Whilst the older style filament bulbs are now being phased out, you could struggle to get to grips with the newest options on the market. They all claim to save money and energy, so feel free to do your own research on the types of bulbs that could work for you. For my money, however, there’s one clear winner. LED bulbs. Why? They’re fully recyclable, they don’t contain harmful chemicals (always a bonus!), and they last for over 20 years. I decided to switch and save with LED Hut because I could choose plastic bulbs, which is a huge selling point for me because I always drop lightbulbs. In fact, I dropped one of my new LED bulbs when I was trying to screw it into my lamp! Oh, did I mention LEDs could save you up to £240 per year. It’s nice when things just work, isn’t it?
FEELING THE CHILL?
Did you know that cavity wall insulation is sometimes offered for free? This fantastic home heat saver is a great way to keep all that bought-and-paid-for warmth from escaping, meaning you can switch the central heating off at a much earlier time in the evening. The insulation actually works in two ways; First, there’s the obvious benefit of keeping heat in, but there’s the often-overlooked secondary benefit of keeping the cold outdoors from cooling your home through the wall. Look into your local options and start saving money with wall insulation if you can.
FILL THE FREEZER
I know what you’re thinking – what on earth has filling the freezer got to do with anything? Well, it’s simple really. An empty freezer needs constant chilling, which is a drain on your electricity consumption. However, a freezer crammed with garden peas, microwave meals, and last night’s leftovers is a great way to maintain the freezing temperature from within. My mum always told me to fill the freezer with loaves of bread to take up the space because the appliance will only come back to life when needed, giving your electric usage a well-earned break in between.
DOORWAY DRAUGHTS
As an extra point that you may not have thought about (and this comes from experience) I would always advise people wishing to save money on their electric bills to position the thermostat away from entrances – especially the front or back door. Internal doorways get draughts too. Doorways that open to the outside world are obviously going to reflect the cooler temperature if they have been opened recently so the reading from these thermostats could lead you to believe that your home is colder than it is, meaning you might raise the temperature and cost yourself money needlessly.
Thanks to the LED Hut for working with me to share these handy tips for reducing your energy bills at home and if you have any more ideas of quick and easy ways to slash your bills, please let me know – I’m using the bank holiday to make plans for my home renovation and would love to include more energy-saving solutions!
