It can be difficult to find a balance between spending time and money on improving and your home versus actually enjoying it! Here are a few small ways that you can renovate your home to boost its kerb appeal, while still taking pleasure in the process..
Kerb appeal is usually only considered an issue when you are ready to sell your home. But it’s something you should be concerned about all the time. After all, a well cared for home does more than put a smile on your face when you come home in the evening. It also adds value to the area and can help you to be part of the community. After all, who doesn’t want to live next to a neighbour who keeps their front garden tidy and cleans their windows?
After working on renovating my home for about 18 months, I’m ready to take a step back and actually enjoy living in it, even though we’re nowhere near finishing it. That said, I’m not going relax SO much that I let it become tatty – there are still some small scale renovations we can all do to improve the kerb appeal of our homes. But don’t forget you don’t need to do all the work yourself; it is possible to get quality labour hire that will do all the work for you, so that you can sit back and enjoy living in your lovely home stress-free!
REVIVE THE FRONT DOOR
Your front door is the main entrance to your home but you may not step back and look at it often enough. However, it plays a large part in your home’s kerb appeal. You can remove the door and replace it, which is a fairly simple process. However, you could also save money by painting the door you already have or by simply changing the hardware on it. Little changes will transforming the door and improve the entrance of your home at the same time.
POT THOSE PLANTS
Potted plants are great; you can move them wherever you need them and they attract fewer weeds than those in a flower bed. You can even position pots along the side of the drive or either side of your front door to create a welcoming entrance. As they flower they will add a splash of seasonal colour to your garden.
DO YOUR DRIVE
Your driveway is another part of your home that can be taken for granted. Stop for a moment and look at it. If it has several potholes or missing tiles and weeds then you need to transform it. A great way to do this on a budget is with gravel. Alternatively, you can add new concrete, tarmac, block paving or even paving slabs. The choice is yours and is surprisingly simple to do when you already have a driveway to add to. I wrote about ways to improve your driveway on a budget so check out that post for inspiration.
PAINT IT
You can give your home a fresh coat of paint – or at least pressure wash it – at least once a year to keep it looking its best. Of course your choice of colour should be neutral and in-keeping with the rest of the neighbourhood! Perhaps stick to the same original colour, just add another coat to freshen it up a little. Alternatively, if your render isn’t looking great, you can always clad the outside of your home. There are a variety of different cladding materials on the market these days (including some composite cladding that’ll never need re-painting, hurrah!) and they come in an array of colours so you should be able to find a style that suits you.
LIGHTING
An easy way to boost your kerb appeal is to add additional lighting outside your home. This is a small project but you may need the help of an electrician to complete it. Lighting should direct visitors up your path to the front door. You can also have security lights to protect the property from intruders. It’s also a good idea to add in some subdued lighting in the garden, which will help you to relax and enjoy the property you’ve worked so hard on! I added some solar-powered fairy light this month and I’m so pleased that I did!
All of these aspects will add kerb appeal to your property, as they’ll make your home look more attractive from the outside and will therefore be more desirable when you come to sell it. Even if you’re not planning on selling anytime soon, these small scale renovations can help you enjoy your home more while you’re living in it. It’s really satisfying when you get to the end of a renovating project, isn’t it Noor?! Congrats on your recent DIY achievements!
That sounds like a lot of work, but sounds very exciting!! I just finished a bathroom remodel this past month, and I’m in the process of helping my parents with their new kitchen. So its a lot of work but its definitely worth the hard work!
