Serves approx 6: 500g packet of pasta (I chose penne, which is the cheapest in my local supermarket at 39p!), 1 tin of tuna chunks in spring water, 1 tin chopped tomatoes, 1 large onion (red or white), 2 fresh tomatoes, 2 tsp garlic paste, 3 tbsp tomato puree, 2 tsp mixed herbs, 2 tbsp flour, 3/4 pint milk, 50g cheese, 2 knob of butter, splash of oil.
- Cook up a pack of pasta according to packet instructions and in the meantime, you can get on with preparing the sauce.
- Finely chop the onions and fry in the oil until the softened.
- In a larger pan, melt the butter then add the flour and stir before adding the milk a bit at a time so that the sauce thickens.
- When all the milk is combined, add the garlic paste, tomato puree and herbs and stir through before adding the tin of tuna, cooked onions and tin of chopped tomatoes.
- Add in the cooked pasta and stir to combine before adding to an oven-proof dish and arranging sliced tomatoes on top with a sprinkling of cheddar cheese
- Bake in the oven until tomatoes have softened, cheese is melted and looks golden brown on top
I hope you give this recipe a go, and let me know how you get on 🙂

Ahh that’s lovely, thanks very much Ash 🙂
Mix herbs are a common thing, so I don’t know why this seems to be a big issue ♀️ think the recipe is great as it is!
Hi Zella, sorry about that – when I say ‘mixed herbs’, I mean the shaker of dried mixed herbs available from supermarkets: the one I’ve got here contains basil, thyme, marjoram, parsley, oregano and sage. I can’t be sure if that’ll give you the specific taste you’re after but hope this helps 🙂
Not really helpful, trying to make a dairy free version and looking for what flavours to put in it “mixed herbs” doesn’t exactly help create a specific taste, can’t use prepare sachet mix as they have dairy!
Ooh I’m not sure – I guess it depends on the pack of mixed herbs you have in your cupboards! My pot of supermarket own-brand dried mixed herbs contains thyme, parsley, oregano, sage and basil 🙂
What herbs are in mixed herbs please ?
Thanks so much Hannah, I am glad you all enjoyed it! 😀
Oh my! I love this! I usually buy the packet and feel a rubbish mummy, but now I can do it all homemade! Xxx
Kids totally loved it- delicious
Thank you for sharing x
That’s great news, thanks very much Natalie 🙂 enjoy!
I usually use a packet mix for this recipe but after getting home and realising I had everything except the packet, a quick Google search brought up this recipe. Easy to follow and delicious and won’t be buying packets any more
Ah that’s great news, I’m so pleased you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks very much for letting me know, I’m delighted! 😀
I always get paid out for making a boring pasta, so last night after finding a can of Tuna at the farm, I thought let’s try something new. Your meal was a pleasure to make and won me – the books of the family a big tick. The kids and my wife loved the meal. It made two large casserole dishes and the kids want it for lunch today. Thanks again from Anglesea in Australia ;). PS I will make this many more times
Thank you, I’m so pleased you had a go at making this recipe and enjoyed eating it! It’s one of my favourites 🙂
