So here’s the latest photos of my guest room makeover. We’ve made a little more progress since my last guest room makeover post (where you can see all the ‘before’ and decorating photos) and finally have all our furniture back in the room. We’ve added some bedding that we already owned, some cushions I made and a few lovely accessories so I thought I’d share some photos of the nearly-finished room. By the way, I’m running a giveaway to win a £50 voucher for Inspired Wallpaper (the company that I ordered my wallpaper from) so read on to enter the competition below!Getting the furniture back in the room make a massive difference to the feeling of the room. We’d already given grandad’s old tallboy a little makeover and grandma’s carved wood bed is still in great condition so we could put those into the room without any further DIY-ing. I’m really happy with how well the dark wood goes with the dark dusky teal and blue-slate colours on the walls. And, far from covering up the deco patterned wallpaper, the bed makes that feature wall look even more impressive. We decided to give our Stag drawers a mini makeover before they went into the room. The walnut wood was scratched, stained and water-marked so they needed a little TLC. We carefully sanded back the surface and gave it a stain in a dark walnut colour – the same one we used on the tallboy wardrobe. A final buff with some wax brought up the shine and protected the wood. The only other upcycling we did was adding covering the seat of grandma’s old dining chair with a burgundy faux leather. The shape of the room determined the layout. Of course, we’d already decided that the wall behind the headboard would be the feature wall and the only spot for the tallboy was beside the built-in cupboard. This left a short run along the window wall for the Stag drawers. We added an oak mirror that we’ve had stored in the garage for years, which had created a kind-of dressing table sideboard. There isn’t really room for a bedside table (unless we find some really narrow ones!) so we popped a copper-and-black cage lamp on the chest of drawers instead, and it lights up the corner perfectly. We got this lamp a while ago from Iconic Lights and the exposed Edison filament bulb really fits in well with the vintage style of the room. We added a second lamp on the other side of the bed – this one is a clip-on lamp in a putty colour that we bought for a couple of pounds at a car boot sale. We fixed it onto the headboard to allow guests to read in bed.The rug was a bargain find at a retro and antiques fair – after a bit of haggling, we got it for just £10! We added just a few extra accessories to make the room more homely; a knitted blanket, an autumnal painting that we’ve had packaged up fr ages, and a glass coaster made by one of our artist friends. To keep the room smelling fresh we added a diffuser and scented candle by Monsoon. The fragrance is ‘seaspray and cotton’ and the metal design on the front of the glass fits in perfectly. In terms of bedding, we are using our linen sheets from Eve. The bedding is reversible with a lighter grey on one side, and a darker grey on the other. The darker hue is almost the same slate grey as the paint we used on the floor and wall so, even though this bedding set is usually on our own bed, I’ve given it over to visitors when they come to stay. Our pillows are a little on the ‘airy’ side so I think a couple of decent pillows should go on the shopping list before our next lot of visitors arrive.I made the bird cushions using RSPB placemats a while ago and the autumnal colours tie in with the reddish hues in the wallpaper. If you’re interested, the wallpaper we used is Crown Flora Nouveau in ‘peacock’. I’ve also just picked up a cosy Snuggle-Ups blanket by Heat Holders in a rusty bronze colour. Just by adding a few warm tones, the whole room feels more inviting and cosy and it really brings out the terracotta colour in the wallpaper. Other DIY tasks included changing the radiator for one with a higher BTU rating to keep guests warm and cosy while staying in the room, and adding a wide-slat blind for complete control of the natural daylight (I’m hoping for my visitors to feel comfy enough in the room that they want to have a lie-in!) The glass lampshade for the ceiling light was given to us by a friend and the subtle deco design fits perfectly. We still need to attach the mirror onto the wall and we are planning to add some shelving to the small alcove. So that’s our guest room all finished. And honestly, I can’t take much credit for it! Hubby chose the wallpaper, which determined the paint colours we used, and we already had all the hand-me-down furniture from grandparents in the garage just waiting to be used. My contribution was the physical DIYing and decorating, and putting together the finishing touches – the fun bit, haha!Anyway, on to the giveaway.
