It’s Fathers Day on Sunday but don’t worry if you haven’t sorted out a gift for Dad – here are 4 ideas for great last-minute gifts that you can make or organise yourself…
You want to show dad how much you appreciate him and Father’s Day on 17th June is a great time to do just that. But, with only a few days to go, what should you get Dad as a last-minute gift that doesn’t cost too much? Here’s how to find the best Father’s Day gifts if you’re on a budget or short on time…
EXPERIENCES
Here’s something you don’t need to have bought and wrapped in advance – an experience. You can come up with an idea and simply write it in his Fathers Day card with the promise of a day out together in the future. It could be a brewery tour – there are so many around the country that a quick search online will find one close to you – or a wine-tasting event at a vineyard. Or you could take a day trip to the coast, buy tickets for the theatre or a sports game, or head to a free museum or gallery.
ACCESSORIES
It can be difficult to pick out clothing for your parents, so stick with something a little safer like accessories. If you’ve got the skills you could knit him a scarf – just use chunky wool to get it finished in super-fast time before Sunday! Otherwise, if you’ve got time to go to the shops treat him to a lovely watch, new leather wallet, travel bag or belt. Or just stick with my favourite ‘cheesy’ gift – socks (with funny faces, like those from ChattyFeet) or a pair of slippers. Birthdays, Christmas and Fathers Day tend to be the only occasion that Dads get new socks etc so why break from tradition??
FLOWERS
Why don’t we buy flowers for men more often? I remember getting my husband a bouquet once and he was so surprised and touched because no-one had ever bought him flowers before. So how about surprising Dad with some special Fathers Day flowers? Or, if he’s a green-fingered guy, a potted plant or a shrub for the garden might be a good idea. That’s something he can enjoy all year round and that’ll remind him of you whenever he’s in the garden.
FOOD
I don’t just mean a meal out – although that’s a good idea too. But a lot of places tend to get booked up in advance on Fathers Day so it might be best to cook a special meal at home for him. You’ve still got time to plan a delicious menu and buy the ingredients and could make it something that the whole family can join in with. If you’re a keen baker, you could take the opportunity to whip up a tasty cake. You can combine food with an experience and pack up a picnic and take it to the park if the weather is lovely.
