Our personal style should be based on more than just whatever piece of clothing happens to be on top of the pile. Your clothing is part of the story you tell the world and is ultimately a big factor in how others perceive you. Starting to gain some awareness about your style isn’t superficial or vain – it’s a powerful tool that can help to redefine your place in the world.
Fashion is for people with loads of money right? Wrong! You don’t have to buy a new wardrobe to change your style. But you do need to change your mindset about your current wardrobe. You can add a few new items to your wardrobe if you have the money but even when doing this there’s no need to pay over the odds. A quick hunt around online will throw up vouchers and other money-saving offers on high street brands, like these New Look discount codes, so there’s no need to break the bank. Now onto the things you can do to give yourself a thrifty fashion boost…
START WITH THE RIGHT MINDSET
Never judge a book by its cover is good advice yet, in reality, everybody does to some degree. First impressions matter. I mean, we’re all told to dress to impress in interviews, aren’t we? First impressions aren’t just made by how nice your clothes look – how your clothes make you feel can also be a factor. When we look good, we feel better. This improves our self-esteem and makes us more outwardly confident. It starts a chain reaction of positivity.
Think of your style as your battle gear you pull on before going out in the world. Feeling good about yourself can even change the way you carry yourself, which clearly sends the message you’re strong and capable. Now you have an open and positive attitude towards your style, now it’s time to …
CLEAN OUT YOUR WARDROBE
How many of you have tops and skirts at the back of your wardrobe that haven’t seen the light of day since the battle of Hastings and are no longer fashionable or do not fit you well anymore? Now is your opportunity to empty all your clothes out and get organised. There may be some items you want to donate to charity. Other items may need altering or repairing, which is often cheaper than buying replacement items. Some of your current clothing will be perfect as it is and will go straight to the ‘keep’ pile.
Once you’ve decided which items you want to keep, think about different ways to mix the clothes together. Do you always wear jeans and trainers? Stick to the jeans but try some formal shoes with them. Take small steps to creating your own style. You will notice a difference in how people respond to you, which will help spur you on to be more adventurous.
ADJUST ACCORDINGLY
Tailoring clothes is often the cheaper option because you can shop secondhand without worrying about the fit. You can take it home and make the adjustments needed to get a great fit. Not only does it help you get more bang for your buck, it also feels a bit special. Your clothes will look a million times better than they did before, and you’ll feel great knowing your clothes are shaped perfectly for your body type. You’ll be saving money, taking a step towards a more sustainable lifestyle, and walking taller in no time.

Oooh I’d love to rummage through your wardrobe – I bet it’s just full of pink and glitter! I’m the same, I keep things for sentimental value – maybe wear it for bed if you’re not going wear it any other time? 🙂
I need so badly to attack my closet but it just seems overwhelming. And then…there’s the sentimental value I’ve placed on a t-shirt I wore to a concert in 2012 – and not since – but can’t get rid of it. Wish you lived closer so you could overhaul my dressing room!
