3 Ways to save money on hiring a van for your next house move

Do you really need a van to move house or can you cut costs by hiring a smaller van or getting friends to help? Here are some tips to help you decide and save money during your house move.

It’s time for you to move out of your old accommodation and into a new home. Whether it is because you are moving to university, moving into your first home, or are just needing an escape from the nightmare of your previous landlord (!) it is important to judge whether or not you should hire a van to take your stuff, or if you should use a smaller vehicle. I mean, anything that helps you save some money during a house move has got to be helpful, right? This list will help you to decide whether you need a van or not…

HOW BIG ARE THE ITEMS I’M MOVING?

When you hire a van to move house, you need to consider whether you’ll be able to pack and drive the van on your own or whether you’ll need to hire some help to move your stuff. Look at how big your furniture is inside your house. This will give you an idea of what size van you might need or whether you can fit it in your car. If you are taking a lot of large, bulky and potentially awkward stuff to move to your new home, you may have trouble even getting it into the van without help. Some items may even be too large to fit out of the doors of your old home, so always be ready to get a helping hand should you need it. That said, some items can be dismantled or flat-packed (I was surprised to discover that my sofa could be taken apart when we moved!) so have a look at what you really need to move ‘whole’ and what can be dismantled first.

TIME SAVING

If you are on a tight deadline to get from one home to another – such as over a weekend or during the school holidays – then hiring a van can be the most time-effective way to sort out your move without stressing over how you are going to fit all of your belongings in your car. You can find help through a professional moving service by searching online van comparison websites for “Man and Van”. This means you won’t end up shoving your things into the car to move as quickly as possible and will have an extra pair of hands to help you with those bulky pieces. If, on the other hand, you have plenty of time and offers of help, you won’t need to hire a van and can cut costs by asking friends and family to drive your stuff to your new home.

If you choose a professional removal company, they will be used to moving people around in their vans, thus they are used to being able to efficiently pack everything effectively so that it can all fit within the van space you have. Be sure to speak to the van company to figure out what sort of vehicle you need. If you have less things to take, you may simply want to hire a smaller van, which will cost less.

MORE THAN ONE JOURNEY

Whilst you may be confident that your house move may only take one trip, if you hire a smaller (cheaper!) van, it might take more than one journey to move everything. This means that the cost of fuel may be higher, especially if you are caught in a heavy flow of traffic. If you are concerned that a very small van may mean a multitude of trips, a Transit van might be a better size to hire. They’re popular due to their medium size and cost-effectiveness for fuel.

I hope that these 3 tips have given you ideas for cutting costs during your house move or will help you to decide whether or not you need to hire a van for the occasion.
