Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing gilding expert Daniel Bland for Reclaim magazine. It was a joy to chat about all things decorative with this talented mural artist and learn all about the renovation and decorating work he’d carried out in his period property.
His home was one of those that stood out on Instagram, for all the right reasons. I’d previously written about Interior Design Masters contestant Joanne Hardcastle’s home, and she put me in touch with Daniel to learn more about his interior. I’ll be sure to share the full interview soon, but for now, here’s a taster of the interior so you can learn more about this designer’s unique style.

With a nod to the tropical modern interior design trend, the home is packed with houseplants and cushions featuring exotic leaf designs, while the wallpaper and upholstery fabrics are adorned with unfurling fronds.
However, Daniel has given the trend a heritage twist by emphasising the period details in the property, from panelled walls painted in traditional green to a fireplace surrounded by a riot of gold leaf (above).

I especially enjoy how he has used the area above the original picture rails to create a music-themed mural. The musical instruments and classic antique furniture add to the authentic period feel.
I’m so impressed with the old Chesterfield sofa that Daniel rescued, which needed to be reupholstered with new seat cushions. This has resulted in a unique piece that complements the dark, dramatic interior.

I was also in awe of the gallery wall in the hallway of this home. It’s a fabulous collection of art and images, some of which spill onto the ceiling – Daniel crafted the custom frame himself. Creating a gallery in the hallway elevates an area that most of us just walk past, so consider adding some photography and paintings in your own hall.
And why not use the ceiling space for displaying special pieces? As a huge fan of all things space-related, I love the solar system mobile that hangs in the hall and the unique light fitting features crystal decanter shades – so opulent!

I hope these snapshots of Daniel’s opulent interior have inspired you to recreate the look yourself. He designed the Acanthus wallpaper you can see in the first couple of images above and it’s available to buy on his website, so it’s possible to achieve the same style in your own period property if you love this heritage-topical look.
Have a look at his Instagram profile @bland_design too and I’ll be sure to share more of his fabulous interior along with the full interview soon. In the meantime, please let me know in the comments below which element of the interior you love the most. 🙂
