3 Daily drinks that help boost our physical health and mental wellbeing

Let’s look at the everyday drinks that boost our wellbeing - from the calming ritual of tea, to a perfectly timed coffee and a nourishing fruit smoothie. These simple habits offer big benefits for the body and mind…

There’s something wonderfully grounding about the little rituals that shape our days. The warm mug in your hands, the steam of the kettle, the whizz of a blender on a busy morning – these tiny moments can make a surprisingly big difference to our wellbeing, both physically and mentally.

I’m sure I don’t need to mention the benefits of drinking more water to improve cognitive function and energy levels or to aid digestion and soothe our skin and joints – so I’ll just assume that you’re drinking fresh water and skip over the essential hydration element!

Today, I’m sharing three of my favourite daily drinks and the science‑backed benefits behind them, inspired by Just One Thing, Harvard research, and the clean‑ingredient ethos of Naked Nutrition. Think of this as a gentle nudge to savour the simple things that help us feel our best…

The Benefits of Drinking Tea

I’ve always said that tea is my love language. There’s a reason the kettle goes on the moment anything happens, good news, bad news, this article to write or just a chilly morning here on the coast. According to the BBC’s health and wellbeing show Just One Thing, that instinct might be doing us more good than we realise.

When I recently watched the episode on the subject of drinking tea (Series 2, Episode 4), I was surprised at how beneficial my favourite brew can be. The show highlights how tea – both green and black varieties – is packed with polyphenols that support heart health, reduce inflammation and even help maintain cognitive function.

The episode mentioned that regular tea drinkers often show improved focus and calm alertness thanks to the gentle pairing of caffeine and L‑theanine. Perhaps my urge to take a cup of tea to my desk before starting any writing task is down to that beneficial combination?

And honestly, isn’t there something magical about the ritual of making tea itself? The pause. The boiling kettle. The moment of “ahh”: I feel like I’m becoming Mrs Doyle from Father Ted! Science aside, just making a warm brew feels like medicine, and that’s without the whole plethora of herbal options I love. Chai, peppermint, ginger – yes please!

One thing I haven’t ever tried before is matcha. However, since watching the show and realising that this too brings health benefits, from vitamin C to antioxidants that can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, I’ve given it a go. I decided to go to the best café in town to try matcha the way it is ‘supposed’ to be served, rather than giving it a go myself! Thankfully, I really liked it, so matcha is fast becoming my drink of choice for future coffee-shop visits.

The Benefits of Drinking Coffee Before Midday

I used to be someone who avoided coffee at all costs  – until I learned of the health benefits, plus how to get the timing right.  Too early can cause a slump later in the day, but too late doesn’t have the same health benefits – what a muddle!

The thing that got me into having one morning cup of coffee was a European Heart Journal study, which linked moderate morning coffee consumption with a reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, compared to non-coffee drinkers or all-day coffee drinkers. It turns out that those antioxidant‑rich beans are doing far more than just helping us wake up – and the benefits come from both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, as long as it’s enjoyed before midday.

I previously learned that there’s an optimum time for caffeine consumption from The Huberman Lab, which I wrote about here. Drinking caffeine a few hours after waking (rather than as soon as we get up) aligns better with our natural sleep-wake rhythm, which is controlled by our adenosine levels. Delaying our first cup helps us feel fully awake in the morning and more energised in the afternoons without needing more coffee, avoiding tipping into the jittery territory that afternoon cups can bring.

Personally, I’ve noticed that keeping my coffee to the morning window makes my afternoons feel smoother – no energy crash, no restless evenings. Plus, my one mid-morning cup makes me super-productive before lunchtime; it’s amazing how much more work I can complete after a coffee break with Pop Master!

The Benefits of a Fruit Smoothie with Whey Protein

My blender is quickly becoming my weekday best friend. There’s something joyful about tossing in berries, a banana, maybe a handful of spinach and watching it all whirl into something bright and nourishing. But the real game‑changer? A scoop of clean whey protein.

I learnt this from my strength trainer Megan Dahlman, who helped me improve my fitness and nutrition while following her coaching program for 40+ women. She suggests that adding whey protein to a fruit smoothie helps support muscle recovery, keeps you fuller for longer and provides a steady release of energy.

It’s best used on busy days and after training sessions, but make sure it’s a clean whey powder to get the health benefits. Naked Nutrition’s ethos – minimal ingredients, no additives, no artificial sweeteners – makes their whey an easy choice for anyone wanting a simple, high‑quality protein source that blends smoothly.

This, combined with the antioxidants and vitamins from the fruit you choose to include in your smoothie, can be a big boost to your physical health. If you add a dollop of Greek yoghurt (which I do on every breakfast) that’s more protein, calcium and probiotics. Plus, you can whizz in chia seeds and milled flax for Omega-3s that help lower cholesterol, making it a super-smoothie!

Whether you’re a tea devotee, a morning‑coffee purist or a smoothie‑lover (or all three, like me), these little rituals can add up to something meaningful for your health and wellbeing.
