Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday the 21st of June 2026, but the occasion doesn’t need to be expensive to feel special. In fact, the most memorable celebrations are usually the ones filled with laughter and quality time together.

Whether you’re planning a cosy day at home or an outdoor adventure, here are some thrifty and creative ways to make Dad feel truly appreciated this Father’s Day.

Budget‑Saving Things To Do With Dad

One of the nicest things you can do for your dad on Father’s Day is to spend some quality time together. But that doesn’t mean splashing out on an expensive experience day or booking the best restaurant – the simple things are just as important and will mean just as much to your dad.

Don’t forget to take a camera with you to capture some memories, but also make sure you put your phone away and stay in the moment – often ‘presence’ is more appreciated than ‘presents’!

1. Go on a “Memory Walk”

Pick a favourite local route that you visited as a family when you were younger, such as a woodland, beach or park, and turn it into a nostalgia trail. Share stories, take photos and maybe even pack a homemade picnic. It’s a free day out, feels meaningful and will give you both the chance to recharge in the great outdoors.

2. DIY Father’s Day Brunch

Instead of booking a pricey restaurant, whip up Dad’s favourite breakfast at home. Pancakes, bacon rolls, french toast waffles or a full English, whatever he loves. Maybe you could even create a handwritten menu and lay the table to make it even more of an occasion.

This is an idea that kids can get involved with, as they can serve dad at the table, bringing him orange juice and fresh fruit. I usually make a special breakfast for my husband on his birthday, and it’s a highlight of the day – especially the one time I tried to bake croissants from scratch and they turned out like mini crispy prawns!

3. Host a Games Tournament

Here’s one for all the family – invite everyone over for a fun games tournament. You can do this indoors if the weather is changeable, or you can enjoy the sunshine with outdoor competitions. Dust off the garden games: boules, swingball, giant Jenga or even put together a homemade obstacle course for races.

It’s possible to find a game to suit all ages, so the youngest grandchildren can even be included in the fun and games this Father’s Day.

4. Try a New Hobby Together

Whether it’s whittling, knitting, photography or birdwatching, spending time learning something side‑by‑side is a gift in itself. You can teach your dad a skill that you already have or ask him to teach you something he knows about. If you want to learn a new skill, you can use an online tutorial to try something new together, or the books below make perfect inspiration.

You may need a few supplies to get started, which can be part of his gift, but once you’ve got the kit, this could become a regular hobby you can enjoy together – you may even end up regularly spending extra time with your dad over the coming months as you practise together.

5. Movie Night With Dad’s Favourites

This is a sweet idea for little ones to do on Father’s Day. Set up a cosy living‑room cinema with blankets, popcorn and daddy’s (family-friendly) top films. Kids can make personalised tickets to the movie showings to add into his Father’s Day card. It’s such a lovely way for the family to spend time together on his special day.

Bargain Gifts Dad Will Love

If you’re not able to spend time with your dad on Father’s Day because you live far apart, don’t fret. You can show dad that you care at a distance by posting a lovely gift to him. This doesn’t need to be something expensive – the most thoughtful gifts often aren’t the most flashy but mean more to your dad.

These gift ideas are letterbox-sized to make sure they’ll easily be delivered in time for Father’s Day, so you won’t have to ask him to stay in to accept the delivery. It’ll be a lovely surprise for Dad to find them on the doormat, ready to unwrap…

A Clever Little Gadget

My first suggestion is one that I’ve previously used myself and I know how practical it is. The Connex adaptor is a compact, stylish multi‑connector that solves the “wrong cable” problem instantly. Perfect for tech‑loving dads, it’s small enough for a keyring and ideal for travel, camping or the car.

I’ve taken mine with me on holiday to minimise packing multiple cables in my carry-on backpack and it seems to charge my tech faster than usual, too. It’s a practical, affordable gift he’ll use daily – plus the ‘swiss-army-knife’ styling makes it look super cool.

Budget‑Friendly Books

A book that will help with the hobby activity I mentioned earlier is the Green Wood Carving book by Harald Lamon. I’m wrapping up this book for Father’s Day this year, so I hope Dad doesn’t read this blog post, haha!

It’s a beautifully photographed, practical guide to carving fresh, natural wood using simple tools. The traditional techniques are broken down into easy, calming steps, perfect for beginners or dads who love slow, mindful crafts. It’s part hobby manual, part invitation to reconnect with nature.

My next selections are rather special; this matching pair of ‘Wisdom’ books. They’re beautifully bound with decorative foil designs, making them a gorgeous addition to your dad’s bookshelf. Plus, the first one is ideal for taking with you on your ‘memory walk’ in the woods with dad.

Woodland Wisdom by Nick Piercere is a reflective book celebrating the quiet magic of the woods, blending folklore, nature notes and thoughtful observations to inspire your father to slow down and rediscover the forest. It’s ideal for outdoorsy dads or anyone who loves a mindful wander.

I’ve previously given my father-in-law the Woodland Wisdom book, so this year I’m going to give him the companion book, Fishing Wisdom by Dominic Garnett. It’s about the peaceful, meditative side of angling, with stories, tips and philosophical reflections that go far beyond catching fish to embrace the calm of the riverbank.

Father’s Day doesn’t need to cost a lot to make your dad feel special. It just takes a little imagination and a lot of heart. Whether you’re gifting a clever gadget, sharing a woodland walk or cooking up a homemade brunch, it’s the time together that Dad will remember most. I’d love to hear your thrifty Father’s Day ideas, so please share your plans, tips or traditions in the comments below. 🙂
