Until this year, I had no idea that there was a National Boyfriend Day on the 3rd of October. However, a quick search showed me just how popular it is – especially as a social media trend. Considering that we have other special days to celebrate the important family members in our lives, it makes sense that there should be a Boyfriend Day too.
Don’t worry, there’s also a National Girlfriend Day too – it’s on the 1st of August – so mark that on your calendar to celebrate with her if you have a girlfriend. In fact, if you’re surprising your boyfriend with a treat this year, make sure you mention the date of National Girlfriend Day as well!
Plus, there’s Best Friends Day on the 8th of June. Interestingly, as a fan of the film, October 3rd has always been Mean Girls Day for me…
Anyway, it makes sense to have special days to honour your other half if you’re not married. Couples who are already married can celebrate their wedding anniversary with each other but these national boyfriend and girlfriend days let unmarried or engaged couples get recognition too.
There’s even a hashtag to share on socials when posting photos of your #NationalBoyfriendDay celebrations so here are some treat ideas to make those selfies worthwhile sharing…
Flowers for all
No, it’s not just women who love receiving flowers for special occasions. I previously sent my husband flowers on his birthday and he loved them. He even got into the swing of arranging the blooms, so much so that we ended up doing a Christmas wreath-making workshop together later that year so that we could create floral displays together.
So, why not make it National ‘give your boyfriend flowers’ Day on the 3rd of October? It’ll be a lovely surprise for him to receive a bouquet from you and it doesn’t have to be an expensive option – you can even cut flowers from your own garden and tie them with a ribbon. Or, if you’re enjoying a long-distance relationship at the moment, you can arrange for a flower delivery to arrive on that date so that he knows you’re thinking of him.
Sweet treats
It’s already a bit of a tradition to enjoy a special meal with your other half on National Boyfriend Day, so how about arranging a date for the two of you to enjoy eating out together? Of course, you could book a fancy restaurant for your celebration or, if you’re on a budget, you could pack up a picnic or cook for him at home.
It can cost much less to make your own meals from fresh ingredients than it would to go out to a restaurant. Plus, you can guarantee that he’ll enjoy it because you’ll be cooking all his favourites. And don’t forget the sweet treats – bake a cake or his fave pud if you’re eating at home, or make brownies or mini dessert cups for an elevated picnic dessert.
Gorgeous gifts
While you don’t necessarily need to buy your boyfriend a gift on National Boyfriend Day, it’s always lovely to treat them to something nice. If you’re sticking to a budget, it’s a good idea to make him something yourself although the meal, cake or the home-picked bouquet would already be enough to make him feel special.

But if you want to wrap up something lovely, I’d recommend choosing an activity gift – either a day out that you can enjoy together or something you can make together like a crafting kit. My husband and I have previously enjoyed painting together using best custom paint by number kits to do portraits of our pets. Plus, we’ve tried clay modelling and leather craft so the next craft on our list is weaving, which is why I’ll be giving him a beginner’s weaving kit from Shivtextiles as a gift for our next celebration.
If you choose an activity-based gift, this means you’ll get to spend some quality time together while you craft and can chat away, help each other and learn a new skill at the same time. I love doing things with my friends and family that help us stay away from screens plus, crafting with your hands is so good for your mental wellbeing, too.
What else will you be doing to celebrate with your partner on National Boyfriend Day? It’s only a month away so it’s time to that romantic date in the diary and make some plans. Let me know in the comments below if you’re planning anything special, I’d love to hear your thrifty ideas…
