Because requesting your partner’s hand in marriage is a significant and transformative question, you likely feel considerable pressure to ensure your proposal is flawless. If the task appears overwhelming or you’re unsure about how to start, here’s a detailed guide to help you with the time when you propose.

This checklist includes everything to consider, from obtaining your partner’s family’s approval to celebrating. I’ve previously shared some tips for planning a DIY couple’s photoshoot so be sure to check out that blog post too so you can capture the special moment. Below is a comprehensive checklist of proposals to assist you in organising the perfect surprise, whether on Valentine’s Day or beyond.

Ask for Permission

Getting a blessing from your partner’s parents may appear to be an old-fashioned custom, but many couples continue to seek their significant other’s parents for permission before a proposal. While it’s not necessary, discussing your choice with your partner’s family demonstrates respect and is a thoughtful act that involves them in the decision-making process.

Involving loved ones also shows your dedication to your partner and might inspire some valuable proposal concepts. If your partner is the conventional type (or their parents are), make sure to obtain their approval before investing time or money in planning the proposal. When you present your case, keep in mind to be purposeful, sincere and genuine.

Determine Their Ring Size

Getting an engagement ring involves substantial investment, so making sure you have the correct size is a crucial step. Although your partner can resize the ring later, it’s much simpler when the size is right from the start.

Additionally, your future partner is likely to be so thrilled about the engagement that they will want to put on the ring right away, rather than take it to a jeweller. It’s known that you’ll want to be clever in finding the right size, so inquire with your partner’s friends and relatives or use a ring your partner already has as a reference.

Find the perfect Ring.

Once you’ve determined the right ring size, you can begin exploring various styles. Perhaps your partner has already talked about their preferred design. If not, speak with people in their close circle for possible suggestions or check out the jewellery they frequently wear. After you have a basic idea of what you want, check out examples like the moissanite halo ring collection or visit a jewellery store in person.

Some couples choose to purchase engagement rings together, but if you want to keep the proposal a secret, purchase the ring at least one month in advance. Leave a wider timeframe if you’re personalizing the sparkler. Remember to purchase a beautiful ring box to keep the sparkling gem.

Insure the Ring

Although insuring the engagement ring may not be your main focus while preparing to propose, it’s a step you should definitely not overlook. As these pieces of jewellery hold both value and sentimental meaning, you and your partner would probably be heartbroken if anything were to occur to them.

If your valuable gemstone is lost, stolen, or damaged, obtaining insurance will provide financial safeguard and tranquillity. You can buy engagement ring insurance from a company that focuses on jewellery insurance or as an add-on to your renters or homeowners insurance policy.

Hide the Ring

To maintain the surprise of the proposal, choose a suitable hiding spot for the rock and ring box. Your sock drawer or kitchen cupboard simply isn’t sufficient.

Instead, consider unusual places that your partner doesn’t typically open, like your toolbox, unused luggage if you aren’t travelling soon, or the pocket of a seasonal garment that’s not currently in use. Don’t forget to keep the receipt hidden as well.

Determine Your Proposal Plan

Proposing on one knee is a unique experience, so you’ll want to request your partner’s hand in marriage in the most heartfelt and unforgettable manner. From organizing a treasure hunt to designing a photo book filled with your cherished moments, there are numerous imaginative methods to propose.

If you intend to include an activity, ensure it aligns with your partner’s interests and personality. Take a moment to think about how you first connected, what makes your love story unique, and what would truly resonate with your partner. Next, formulate a proposal concept that reveals it was genuinely tailored for them.

Choose a Moment and Location

After you have a broad understanding of how you wish the proposal to proceed, decide on the timing and location for its execution. To ensure the event feels personal, the environment should somehow represent your relationship. You might choose to propose on your preferred hiking path, at your favourite restaurant for date evenings, or while on your yearly trip to your beloved beach spot. Remember that a permit is necessary for public proposals and a contract must be signed for private locations.

Another crucial aspect of planning your proposal is determining the appropriate timing. Naturally, you should choose a day that works for both of your calendars. To go above and beyond, pose that important question on a memorable date, like the anniversary of your first meeting or your first date.

Finalize Any Remaining Details

Nothing is more romantic than kneeling on a bed of rose petals, enveloped by candlelight. To make your proposal setup truly unique for your future spouse, think about incorporating bold décor to change the atmosphere.

Along with balloon arches and neon signs, you might consider gifting your partner a bouquet of flowers or celebrating with a glass of Champagne. To prepare for success, create a checklist of all the extra details you must handle before the big event.

Rehearse Your Speech

Although you don’t have to memorize a full speech, it’s good to know what you intend to convey, particularly when nerves factor in. If you’re uncertain about what to say, share your feelings from your initial meeting, when you realized your partner was the right one, the traits you appreciate most in them, how they’ve influenced you positively, and your aspirations for the future. Incorporate personal stories when possible, but above all, express your genuine feelings.

Propose and Celebrate

Once your partner says “yes,” pause to savour the moment—just the two of you—whether it’s sharing a meal or opening a bottle of bubbly. You might also consider organizing a bigger gathering with all your dear ones. This could involve surprising your future partner with an engagement celebration on the evening of the proposal or organizing a gathering for a future date.

I hope these tips will help if you’re planning to propose this Valentine’s Day or at any time this year. Also, please let me know the story of your proposal in the comments below. I’d love to hear how it happened and what went well for you both. 🙂
