Thrifty nursery makeover & DIY mountain wall mural

Remember when I shared a video on painting a mountain mural for a child's bedroom? Well today is the finished 'room tour' with all the little bits and bobs that turned a spare room into baby's haven...

No, you didn’t miss anything – this isn’t my house! There are no new family additions to report here! But my bestie has just welcomed a new baby into the world, hence the preparations for the little one’s nursery.

If you want more nursery decorating tips you can find plenty of inspiration via motherhood communities online and I’ve previously shared the mountain mural blog post so you can create a magical scene in your child’s nursery with just a few tester pots of paint.

The first step to turning this spare room into a nursery was to paint the walls with a mountain backdrop. It’s possible to buy wallpaper murals or stick-on wall designs, but you can save a lot of money by painting your own patterns onto the wall. If you use tester pots of paint or discounted mixed paints from the bargain bin at the DIY store you’ll only be spending a few pounds to get this great effect. If you create a large wall mural, you can leave the other walls plain white, as the eye will be drawn straight to the feature wall. But that’s not all; you can personalise the wall, like my friend did, to show a scene from a favourite holiday destination. If you’d like to see the step-by-step guide to making your own mural check out the video in my DIY Mountain Mural blog post. Babies end up with a lot of ‘stuff’ so storage in a nursery is essential. A run of drawers along one wall provides plenty of storage space for clothing, nappies and toys. “We bought these from Made.com when there was a flash sale. We decides to invest in these timeless sturdy pieces for her room, with deep drawers to stow everything away.”With the addition of a wipe-clean changing mat, the surface doubles up as a changing station. Fun Kit + Kin nappies (with cute animal faces on the bottom!) and wipes are on hand in the top drawers and the colourful prints on the wall distract baby’s attention, making it the perfect spot for a quick change.“I went to a Crafty Fox Market before the little one was born to buy these cloud pillows and panda rattle as gifts for friends, but ended up keeping them for our baby, as I thought they were too cute!! Now she’s over 6 months she loves a rattle.”The frames have plastic fronts rather than glass (which makes them much cheaper, too!) and the posters are printables from Etsy that can be personalised with baby’s name. “The frames are easy to clean when they get covered in little finger prints and they’re lightweight – just in case a little person tries to lift one off the wall!”“We put pictures of our little one and us as a family above the changing mat. Every time she’s finished a change or getting dressed, she loves to stand up and is fascinated looking at the pictures. Plus it is all part of the training to try and teach her my name before daddy!”In terms of toys, these ones by Hape are made from sustainably sourced wood and bamboo. This cute little push-along bird toy from Hape sings and chirps as it moves. It’s just the right height for toddlers, and it encourages walking and helps to develop balance. The Hape Block and Roll is a sturdy walker that doubles up as a storage bin for building blocks. The bright colours really catch baby’s eye and the blocks are easy for little fingers to grasp and stack. This helps babies to develop their hand-eye coordination and can assist them in taking those first steps. The chair from Made.com folds out into a handy single bed, which is ideal for when your little one is poorly and needs company. Plus, it means the nursery can still double-up as a space for a guest to stay if needed. The beanbag was handmade by my friend so I’ll hopefully be able to show you the photos of how it was made soon. There’s no need to change the flooring when turning a spare room into a nursery. Just add a fun rug to give the floor a splash of colour or a touch of pattern. This polka dot rug was from wayfair.co.uk. “I love the fact that the polka dots are slightly raised. They’ve really encouraged her to try baby twister… I mean crawl!”How sweet are these little ‘mini me’ socks from ChattyFeet? These characters are called Danny and Sandy, and can be used a sock puppets, as well as be worn in the usual way. There’s an adult pair each for mummy and daddy, as well as little socks for tiny toes. The family socks sets are a great gift for mother’s day and father’s day, but these were a little ‘welcome to the world’ present when my friends became parents! What do you think of the finished nursery? I’m very impressed with the finished room; it’s an exciting place for baby to play with plenty of eye-catching pictures and toys, but it also looks cool and grown-up enough that it won’t need to be redecorated again for many years to come. Will you be creating your very own wall mural for your little ones? Can you recommend any other toys, books or decor items that’ll aid the development of this little ‘un?
