Cosy caravan makeover: my budget DIY tricks to refresh your holiday home

Give your static caravan a fresh new look with these DIY updates. Here are the frugal décor finds and thrifty storage ideas I used in my own little vintage caravan to help you create a cosy and characterful holiday home...

There’s something nostalgic about unlocking the caravan door for a holiday. The kettle goes on, the duvet is spread out on the pull-down bed and suddenly life feels slower. As a family, we always enjoyed holidays in static caravans throughout my childhood and now I have my own little vintage caravan to enjoy too.

But if your caravan interior hasn’t been updated this century, that cosy feeling can fade. Luckily, giving your holiday home a quick refresh doesn’t need to cost the earth – in fact, some of my favourite transformations have been done with tiny budgets and a bit of enthusiasm at the weekends!

What Are You Working With?

Before you buy anything and get stuck into the decorating, take a look around your caravan and notice what’s bugging you. Maybe the sitting area feels a bit gloomy or the table is too small for family board games. Are the kitchen cupboards looking tired, or is the bedroom not giving “relaxing retreat” vibes?

I always jot down a few notes before I get started – no big fancy plans, just enough to stop me impulse‑buying a trolley full of things from the DIY store I don’t actually need! Once you’ve got your list, pick one area to tackle first. It’s so much more fun to celebrate each mini‑makeover – something that can be completed in a weekend -rather than overwhelm yourself trying to redo everything at once.

Plus, fun as decorating is, a bit of maintenance goes a long way to keeping your caravan in good condition. Check the roof seals, clear out the gutters, air the caravan during winter and store your soft furnishings properly. Paperwork-wise, check your static caravan insurance, pitch fees and terms if you’re staying on a holiday park. A tiny bit of upkeep helps your DIY efforts last longer and keeps your holiday home feeling fresh.

Thrifty Treasure Hunting

If you know me, you know I adore hunting for a bargain. Charity shops, car boot sales, Facebook Marketplace -they’re all bursting with potential decor bargains that I can include in my caravan makeover. Smaller furniture pieces fit perfectly in compact spaces and vintage finds add heaps of charm.

BUT before you head out shopping (even if it IS for second-hand stuff) have a rummage at home. I’ve rediscovered lamps, cushions and little tables that were hiding in cupboards or the garage, so now’s their moment to shine in the caravan. It’s amazing how much you can refresh a space simply by re‑homing things you already own.

Paint: The Weekend Wonder

If you want maximum impact for minimum spend, paint is your best friend. And, smaller spaces inside a caravan can easily be painted within a weekend. At home, I’ve transformed entire rooms with just a tin of paint and a playlist! A fresh coat of paint can brighten those dark corners or modernise dated finishes to make the whole caravan feel bigger and fresher.

Soft neutrals work beautifully in small spaces to make them appear more spacious, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour on a cupboard door or inside the wardrobe. And yes, you CAN paint laminated surfaces! I painted my kitchen cabinets with a Rust-Oleum spray paint and it worked beautifully. Just grab a good primer and take your time to get a smooth finish.

A Kitchen Refresh Without the Price Tag

Caravan kitchens can look tired quickly, but you don’t actually need a full refit to perk them up. Try swapping the handles, adding peel‑and‑stick splashback tiles or wrapping the worktop in vinyl. A couple of matching jars or a tiny herb plant can make the whole space feel more intentional.

It’s possible you might need a new sink or tap, so shop around online for the smallest options available. You can easily plumb them in yourself with the help of a youtube video – it should simply be a case of removing the old items and reattaching the new. It’s amazing how much more modern a kitchen can look with just a few small tweaks like this.

Soft Furnishings for Instant Cosiness

Caravan seating is usually neutral, which is basically an invitation to go wild with cushions, throws and curtains. Mix textures like knitted blankets, velvet cushions and soft rugs to create a cosy layered look that feels inviting all year round.

Bedrooms benefit from a refresh too. A new duvet cover or a cheerful quilt can transform the whole space in minutes. I actually re-covered my seat cushions myself using an old duvet that I stitched into place – basically making a box shape from the fabric. Now the whole seating area is so much more inviting, especially when transformed into the bed in the evenings.

Clever Storage for Small Spaces

Caravans are known for their storage – with cupboards and shelves making the most of every space. But you can also get creative with extra storage options: baskets, hooks, under‑seat boxes and floating shelves can help keep your essentials tidied away.

I love using pretty containers that double as décor, because it ensures the caravan doesn’t feel cluttered, even though it’s a small space. A tidy caravan always feels bigger, brighter and more relaxing.

Upcycling: My Favourite Caravan Hobby

There’s something so satisfying about giving an unloved piece of furniture a new life. So often, I’ve come back from a furniture reuse shop with an item that looks tatty and tired but that I know will look lovely after I’ve finished with it!

A bit of sanding, a splash of paint and some cute handles can turn a plain bedside unit or coffee table into a feature item. Caravan spaces suit smaller items of furniture, so upcycling is perfect for creating unique pieces that fit into the rooms beautifully. Plus, every upcycled piece comes with a story, and I love a holiday home filled with memories.

This is where your caravan becomes truly personal. Plus, you can display your photos and travel souvenirs framed on the walls, add craft‑fair finds, books, games and anything that makes you smile. It’s the little touches that make a static caravan feel like a home away from home.

Lighting That Creates Cosiness

Lighting can completely change the mood of a caravan – or any room, for that matter. Warm LEDs, fairy lights, table lamps and battery‑powered wall lights all help create a soft, warm glow in the evenings. LED strips under cupboards are great for adding ambience without harsh overhead lighting.

The good news about these types of lighting is that they’re often battery-powered (or you can choose solar-powered fairy lights) so you don’t have to do any wiring to install the lights, Just pop them in position and press the ‘on’ button to create that cosy glow.

Small Changes, Big Comfort

When you’re giving your caravan a glow-up, it’s fun to discover how much you can transform the space with just a few small updates. A bit of paint, some thrifty finds, clever storage and personal touches can turn your caravan into a cosy retreat you’ll love returning to.
