4 Proven ways to plan your home extension perfectly

Planning a home extension is incredibly exciting. You get to finally add that extra chunk to your home & it can be a frugal option to "improve, not move". This kind of job also comes with challenges, so here are 4 ways to plan your extension perfectly:

If you’re thinking of renovating your home in the new year, I bet you’re feeling pretty excited about it! I’m doing the same myself and have a Pinterest board full of ideas! However, when it comes to the practical parts of planning an extension, I’m a little less enthusiastic.

But, if you don’t have a clear strategy and the right people on board, what starts as a brilliant vision can quickly become a stressful situation. When it comes to home renovation projects, you’ve got to be sensible and have everything structured properly, so here are some tips to get you started:

1. State Your Goals And Stick To Them

You’ve got to define what your goals actually are before you begin. There will be things you want to achieve, so make them known and put them on paper. Think about how the new space will be used and who will use it. It’s very easy to think about last-minute changes without any sort of plan and without clarifying your goals. If every single party understands the main goal of the extension, you are more likely to get the results you want.

2. Realistic Budgeting

By budgeting early, you can make more informed choices about the designs as well as the materials you will use. You should always include a buffer for unexpected costs because surprises always pop up. By breaking down the project into little sections, you will be able to prioritise essential parts first.

If you have a clear framework for your budget, you will make much smarter decisions and reduce stress levels. You will have to compromise on things that ultimately undermine your vision.

3. Find Trusted, Reliable Professionals

It’s pivotal that you find the right people for each stage of the project. Your extension will only be as good as those working on it. Typically, construction companies and tradesmen will be brilliant at their jobs, but you might accidentally hire a low-quality worker. Reliable tradespeople and planners won’t just bring your ideas to life – they’ll do so safely and brilliantly.

You could ask your neighbours who they would recommend locally – especially if they’ve already had a similar extension built on their own home. If your homes are identical, it could actually be a cost-effective option to use the same architect or builders if you’re building the same project, as they’ll already be familiar with the job.

Or you could use a service like Mr Remodel home services in order to find vetted experts. This will reduce the risk of hiring the wrong team. The right professional support will ensure that you adhere to building codes so that there are no issues with regulations.

4. Handle Timings and Logistics

An extension is mainly about the design and execution. It’s also about the logistics. If you want a smooth process throughout, you need to be proactive with permits and planning permissions. It’s all well and good wanting to get this project off the ground, but you may not be able to.

You should also think about how the construction around you will affect your daily life. Schedule your work in a logical sequence so that you can keep the project moving efficiently and prevent frustrating delays. You have to think about lighting, heating, and access from the very beginning so that the new space will integrate seamlessly with what you already have.

When everything is planned out meticulously, the end product will be cohesive and enhance your living environment, so I hope that this checklist will help your own home extension project to run smoothly.
