You know how much I love to write about cruelty-free beauty and haircare on my blog, but what can you do to take care of your hair that don’t involve any products at all? In order to maintain a perfectly healthy and lustrous mane, the experts have come up with different ideas of how best to manage hair – but should all that advice be believed? Today I’m collaborating with HairClippersClub to debunk some common haircare myths.

Myths are rife in haircare. And some of them could very well get you caught up in unhealthy hair care practices. Could it be that you’ve been following a couple of these ‘old wives tales’ yourself? If you want to grow your hair longer or simply have stronger, healthier hair there are several myths that you can ignore and still have great looking hair:

1 SHAMPOOING CAUSES HAIR LOSS

Shampooing is an essential part of hair grooming. Various types of shampoos are on the market to suit the unique needs of different hair types. However, some people believe that shampooing causes hair loss. But that cannot be further from the truth! Shampoos are meant to clean your hair strands and scalp by breaking down the oils and products leaving you feeling fresh. If you have experienced hair loss during shampooing, it is probably a result of too much rubbing when washing! The other reason is that you already had some broken strands of hair that shed during shampooing.

2 COLOURING YOUR HAIR IS UNHEALTHY

Colouring hair is a great way to accentuate the best features of a person, such as the colour of their eyes or the tone of their skin. Trying out different hair colours can be good, whether done at home or by a hair expert. Still, most people hold back from doing it in the belief that colouring hair is unhealthy. This myth is both true and untrue: while bleaching is harsh on your hair and can cause damage, even on your scalp, other colour treatments can be beneficial for your hair. Adding a natural, nutrient-rich colour adds an extra layer of protection on your hair strands making it less prone to breakage and damage and can even give your hair a conditioning treatment. It all depends on the type of product you’re using so do your research to ensure a healthy hair colouring experience.

3 TRIMMING YOUR HAIR MAKES IT GROW FASTER

Trimming is an essential part of hair care that is highly encouraged, even by experts. However, the notion that cutting your hair makes it grow more quickly shouldn’t be believed. The truth is, trimming doesn’t have any role to play in boosting growth. The reason why cutting your hair every once in a while is encouraged is because split broken ends make hair look thinner as well as cause more tangle, which may result in hair breakage and damage. While trimming will keep your hair neat – which is a good thing for a healthy looking head of hair – don’t let yourself believe that it will result in hair growth. You can even trim your family’s hair at home using hair trimming tools from hairclippersclub.com – just take care while cutting!

4 AIR DRYING IS BETTER THAN BLOW DRYING

Heat has been known to cause hair damage, which is the reason behind this myth. Styling hair with heat exposes your hair strands to an extreme temperature that dry out the essential protective oils. Hair damaged by heat cannot be fixed, not even by hair products. Air drying is an ideal option every while you can, but blow drying is not entirely out of the question. The best part about blow drying is that it can blow out more than just water. If there are any residues of dirt and oil build-ups, a blow dryer set on low temperatures can do the trick. Always choose hair grooming tools that have a temperature regulator to minimise damage during styling.

5 WASHING YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY IS HEALTHY

Like taking a shower every day, people believe that washing their hair daily is a wise idea. On the contrary, hair is not like the body. Washing, especially with shampoo, strips the hair of natural oils, which might leave your scalp and hair strands very dry and prone to breakage. If you take part in a lot of activity or exercise during the day, the need to wash your hair daily might be justified. However, it is best to run it through water instead of shampooing every day.

6 FREQUENTLY BRUSHING YOUR HAIR BOOSTS GROWTH

Have you ever heard the old wives’ tale that brushing your hair with a 100 strokes before bed will make it strong? The truth is, brushing your hair is helpful in styling, but more importantly, in evening out the natural oils in the hair strands, predominantly for curly hair. However, frequently brushing your hair does not do anything for your hair growth. The unfortunate fact is that too much brushing might cause hair loss through breaking!

Turning a blind eye to these myths associated with hair care will help you make decisions about your hair care that are right for you. A lot of information is available from hair stylists, both in your local salon or online, and their advice can help you to decide on a haircare routine to your needs.
