As the saying goes, you’re only as old as you feel — but most of us want to look young, too! More than ever before, marketers are trying to cash in on this with the global anti-aging industry topped out at over $42 billion USD in 2018, and is expected to reach over $55 billion within the next four years. Yikes!

If you’re wondering about less spendy ways to keep your skin supple and youthful, here are several ways to ensure that your health and beauty goes more than skin deep…

MAKE HYDRATION A PRIORITY

Not long ago, Twitter user Alex Pettijohn tweeted, “I used to think coffee was a grown-up drink. Then I thought alcohol was a grown-up drink. Now I have finally achieved full enlightenment to understand that it is water that is the grown-up drink.” Nearly 100,000 folks have retweeted that sentiment, which definitely falls into the “funny because it’s true” category.

Hopefully you agree and are getting your recommended six to eight glasses each day. If not, get on the bandwagon! It can be easier to consume all that H20 if you perk it up with lime, lemon, cucumber, or fruit. And remember that herbal tea and freshly pressed juice also count!

STEP AWAY FROM THE JUNK FOOD

Remember the days when you could eat whatever you wanted — gooey, cheesy pizza, fried chicken, crusty bread slathered with butter, bacon sandwiches for breakfast every morning — and never suffer any ill effects? Once we hit a certain age, rich foods not only cause us to pack on the pounds, they can also give us heartburn and indigestion.

Curtailing your intake of heavy, greasy, sugary, salty, and processed meals is one of the best choices you can make for your health. A well-balanced diet helps with heart health, muscle tone, bone density, and even glowing, radiant skin. To make these eating habits more affordable, consider growing your own fresh veg and fruits, baking your own hearty whole-wheat bread, or even going vegetarian.

BE VIGILANT ABOUT SKIN CARE

If your bathroom cabinet is cluttered with lotions and potions, each dedicated to a different body part, but all purporting to do the same thing: reverse the aging process, you may be wondering – does this stuff really work? And are the toners, eye creams, serums and oils that cost an arm and a leg any better than their low-cost counterparts?

That depends on who you ask. Expert opinions are divided, and there is some evidence that certain skin care ingredients can have a smoothing, firming, lightening or brightening effect. But most dermatologists agree that you don’t have to shell out hundreds of pounds to get effective products.

There are a few basic steps that everyone should take when it comes to their beauty regime; Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, exfoliate occasionally, make sure to moisturise and always use SPF. Most importantly – never sleep with your makeup on! And don’t forget the rest of your body. Use an organic body lotion with SPF to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy.

BEAUTY STARTS ON THE INSIDE

Don’t underestimate the importance of your emotional state on your looks, either. Have you ever met someone who looks older than their actual age, simply because they’ve had a rough go of things? Of course, we can’t always avoid stressors, and practicing self care is often easier said than done. But do what you can to stay on an even-keel, live with purpose, laugh off life’s worries, and embrace everyday joys.

Is there a skin care product you swear by? Can you see the difference in your mirror when you eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise, and take care of yourself in other ways? Share your thoughts on the ageing process, the beauty industry, or the secret to growing old gracefully in the comment section below 🙂
