How to recycle & reuse old biscuit & sweet tins

If you’ve been enjoying a few treats over the festive period, you’ve probably got a recycling box full of sweet tubs and biscuit tins. It seems such a shame to send them off to be recycled, especially when some of the designs are really rather lovely. Here’s how to quickly upcycle them into cake tins for your kitchen…I got this tin of IKEA ginger biscuits as a gift from my friends – and very lovely those biccies were too! We ploughed through them in days. So, what to do with an empty biscuit tin with a cute Scandi design? Why, spray paint it, of course!

I wanted to keep the festive design on the sides, so I just tackled the lid. Here’s a little video of the process, which I first shared on my Instastory @Cassiefairy. The key here is to only spray paint the outside of the tin. That way, it is still food-safe on the inside. I went for a simple colour-matched paint but you could add an extra layer of spray paint and use a stencil to decorate the top. Or just add stickers or vinyl cut-outs etc, if you’re feeling fancy.

I reused my tin to take a batch of freshly-baked mince pies over to my mum during the holidays. It’ll end up in my baking cupboard, ready to keep all my muffins and biscuits fresh throughout the year.

Let me know if you’ve upcycled any of your empty Christmas biscuit tins and sweet tubs by leaving me a comment below or tagging me in your instagram pics @Cassiefairy. And keep an eye on my Instagram stories for more quick and easy DIYs and recipes.
